Professor Raashid Nehal has been teaching ELT and Communication Skills courses over the last 33 years at the Department of English at Aligarh Muslim University. He has served as Director, AMU Kishanganj Centre, and Regional Director for Centre for Distance Education (CDE) for AMU Kishanganj Centre, and as Assistant Director, CDE. He has served as a member of the AMU Executive Council, Academic Council, and AMU Court. He has been Visiting Faculty at IIT Dhanbad and was on the External Faculty Panel at EFLU, Hyderabad. His research includes Professional Communication Skills, ESL Writing, Interpersonal Communication Skills, Sociolinguistics, Academic Writing, Teacher Education, Needs Analysis, and Marginalization Studies.


He previously served as Lecturer in the Department of English at Rajiv Gandhi Central University, Arunachal Pradesh, India. He holds a PhD in Writing from AMU and completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching of English (PGDTE) from EFLU. He has done ELT courses on TESOL Methodology, Online Teacher Development, and ESL/EFL Assessment from the University of Maryland, Indiana University’s School of Education, and University of Oregon, USA respectively.


He has published over 58 papers in a variety of journals, including British Council Documents, South Asian Language Review, Indian Journal of Canadian Studies, Aligarh Journal of Linguistics, Language Forum, Journal of Teaching & Education, Journal of the Faculty of Arts, AMU, to name a few. He has contributed chapters to handbooks published by IGI Global, USA, and has made over 70 paper presentations for international/national conferences, seminars, and workshops. He has authored a book on Writing for Audience and edited a volume on Critical Pedagogy. He is a reviewer of the Journal of Educational Planning & Research (JEPR) published


by NIEPA and Sage Open Journals. He has worked as workshop coordinator, teacher trainer, resource person, and master trainer for over 100 national and international Faculty Development Workshops/Conferences, Training of Teachers (ToT) workshops, including RELO American Access Program, UGC HRDC AMU, and at AMU Kishanganj Centre. He also has extensive experience in curriculum development, assessment, and ELT syllabus designing for PG and UG courses. He is FYUP Coordinator for Communicative English, Department of English, AMU.


He has completed UGC projects on Academic Writing and Training Needs Analysis (2010–12) and has also been the Project Coordinator for the Hornby Alumni Regional India Project (2003–05) on Materials Adaptation in the Aligarh Region, funded by the British Council’s ELT Group and Hornby Trust, UK. As part of the Kindle Assessment Project team, Prof. Nehal has completed a RELO project on Kindle Mobile Learning Initiative (2013), funded by the American Centre, for the English Access Microscholarship Program (EAMP) Centres in India in association with UGC HRDC Centre, AMU. He has worked as a Program Advisor for the Training Program for Madarsa Teachers, Centre of Excellence in Public Policy & Government, IIM Kashipur. As Conference Director, he was an awardee under the Shastri Conference & Lecture Series Grant (SCLSG 2021–22) for organizing an international conference on Interpersonal Communication Challenges for Indian Immigrants in Canada. Recently, as Conference Convener, he was also awarded a grant from ICSSR, New Delhi, in May 2024 for organizing an international conference on Appropriate Teaching Methodology in Interdisciplinary Contexts: Mapping Sociolinguistic Diversity. Currently, he is Evaluation Commissioner for the International Accreditation Organization (IAO), India Chapter, since July 2023. Most recently, he has been nominated as a member of the Board for the School of English Language Education, EFLU.
