J.N. Medical College Library

Faculty Library, J.N. Medical College, AMU

INTRODUCTION

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU has the distinction of having one of the best medical libraries in India. It came into existence in the year 1962 with the establishment of the college. Since then the library has been a major source of reference for about 2000 users of the J.N. Medical College, Z.A. Dental College, Institute of Ophthalmology, and The School of Nursing along with the students of other related/allied departments of AMU.

The mission of the library is to advance education, research, and scholarship by meeting the information needs of its clientele through high-quality resources and services. Since its inception, the library continues to make rapid progress and now it is a premier knowledge hub equipped with the latest ICT tools and technologies. The National Medical Library (NML), New Delhi has selected this library to provide free full-text access to 235+ e-journals in the field of Health & Allied Sciences under the Consortia ERMED.

Initially, the library had a collection of a few thousand books and periodicals with a few staff members but later the library continued to make progress with the increasing number of students from time to time. Now the library has a collection of more than fifty thousand books and subscribes to about 100 national and international printed journals in various specialties and maintains its archived collection of old journals (bound volumes). With the rapidly shifting paradigm from print to online, a large number of e-resources/databases are made available for students and faculty to access and download health and allied sciences literature. One of the most important information tools for healthcare professionals namely UpToDate has been recently subscribed to access the latest health information for PG students, clinicians, and other faculties of the JNMC.

It serves the medical community by providing an extensive collection of information sources to support the faculty of medicine research, teaching, and patient care missions. It also provides personal assistance to the faculty, staff, and students who have difficulty or complex queries or simply need help finding and using the appropriate resources.

The library is now fully Air-conditioned with separate AC rooms exclusively for PG students / Interns and faculty members. It also provides a free WiFi facility to students and staff members for accessing e-resources.
