AMU FACULTY INVITED AT SEMMELWEIS UNIVERSITY, BUDAPEST

Prof.  Afshan Bey visited the Department of Periodontology,   Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary on an invitation from Prof. Dr. Péter Windisch , Head of the Department. She was warmly welcomed in the department.
During the period her visit from 2nd to 16th September 2022, she interacted with the teaching staff and the postgraduate students of the department and took overview of Dental education in Hungary.


She highlighted her experiences in periodontal surgeries, dental implantology and various innovative techniques practiced in the Department of Periodontics in Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.  Dr Afshan Bey shared her experiences of alveolar bone preservation ad regeneration also.  She was told about research activities in the department like   periodontal-guided tissue regeneration, mucogingival surgery, genetic polymorphism studies, periodontal biomaterial research and periodontal epidemiology. 
Professor Windisch desired to continue with the association of Semmelweis University and the Aligarh Muslim  University and to initiate inter institutional exchange program to facilitate research and training at faculty and students level.

No Tobacco Day” (31st May)

On the occasion of “No Tobacco Day” (31st May), the Department of Periodontics & Community Dentistry, Dr. Z.A. Dental College, AMU, Aligarh organized various programs to create awareness on multiple ways of exposure to tobacco and its ill effects on the health of people worldwide.
The Dept organized a No tobacco rally which was flagged off by Honorable Dean faculty of Medicine Prof (Dr.) Rakesh Bhargava at 8:00 am. The rally started from Dental college with faculty members, students, and supporting staff who railed to the duck point, AMU campus. The rally was led by respected Principal Dr. Z A Dental College Prof (Dr.) R K Tiwari . The strength of the rally was 100, which was organized as an attempt to initiate a tobacco-free AMU campus. The students and Faculty were holding no tobacco banners and pluck cards raising slogans on quitting tobacco and its ill effects. The rally lasted from 8:00 am to 9:00 am when members dispersed.
The department further organized a dental screening and treatment camp at the district jail, Aligarh. The camp was organized for the jail prisoners who were currently residing in the jail. In this camp, awareness was spread regarding the sign and symptoms of oral cancer and the long term deleterious effects of tobacco consumption. The program included Nukkad Natak (skit) focusing on the multiple ways on how exposure to tobacco affects the health of people worldwide. Oral cavity examination was done among the patients. The attending doctors and interns have also educated the importance of oral hygiene and oral care. We diagnosed 247 patients with various oral health-related issues. Among all 27 patients who were provided non-surgical extractions and 18 patients who were given permanent restorations, 3 patients also showed signs and symptoms of oral cancer. Most of the patients diagnosed were suffering from dental caries along with poor oral hygiene. Oral hygiene instructions were given verbally to each patient at the time of diagnosis and the brushing technique was also explained with the help of a model and brush. Oral health education and tobacco counseling were provided to all the patients, through charts, models, and pamphlets.

The program was guided by Dr.R K Tiwari (Professor & Principal ZADC,AMU) under the supervision of Dr. Vivek Kumar Sharma (Proffessor and Chairman), Dr. Neha Agarwal (Professor),Prof. Dr N D Gupta (Professor),Dr Afsha Bey ( Professor),Dr. Pramod Kumar Yadav (Assistant Professor), Dr. Syed Amaan Ali (Assistant Professor) and Dr. Munazza Ansari (JR).
Interns and undergraduates, Sana, Shabaat, Shivani, Lovekush, Hussain,Waqar, Prashant, Chandni, Mansi, Sahla ,Naukheez, Ummul, Parth, Urooj and Sara were actively involved in the successful implementation of the programs.




World No Tobacco Day’ At AMU

 Aligarh : The ‘World No Tobacco Day’ was observed at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) with campaigns to highlight the ill-effects of tobacco use on people’s health and on the environment.

At the Department of Radiotherapy, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), patients and their attendants were briefed about the adverse effects of tobacco consumption.

Faculty members and resident doctors explained how smoking and tobacco consumption in other forms cause cancer, heart diseases, strokes, lung diseases, diabetes, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

“Tobacco consumption increases the risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis” said Prof Shahid A Siddiqui (Principal, JNMC and Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology) in a seminar held to observe the day.

He spoke on the increasing burden of diseases related to malignancies which can be prevented through awareness campaigns.

Speaking on this year’s ‘World No Tobacco Day’ theme, ‘Poisoning our Planet’, Prof Mohammad Akram (Chairman, Department of Radiotherapy) also recited his self-composed poem on how tobacco use leads to cancer and death.

Resident doctors presented a skit on adverse effects of tobacco use.

Dr Mohsin extended the vote of thanks.

Similarly at the Department of Periodontics and Community Dentistry, Dr Z A Dental College (ZADC) awareness programmes were held on the harmful effects of tobacco use and how the cessation of smoking and other tobacco consumption habits lead to substantial health benefits.

On the occasion, ‘No Tobacco Rally’ was flagged off by Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Dean, Faculty of Medicine). Prof R K Tewari (Principal, ZADC) led the rally from ZADC to the Duck point off the university with over 100 student and faculty members holding placards on harms of tobacco use.

Students and faculty members of the Dental College also organised a dental screening and treatment camp for prisoners at the District Jail, Aligarh and presented a skit on the deleterious effects of tobacco consumption.

Mr P K Singh (Jailor, District Jail, Aligarh) and his team joined to assist in the dental screening of around 247 prisoners.

Prof Vivek Kumar Sharma (Chairman, Department of Periodontics and Community Dentistry), Prof Neha Agarwal, Prof N D Gupta, Prof Afsha Bey, Dr Pramod Kumar Yadav and Dr Syed Amaan Ali helped conduct the dental screening and awareness programme.
