Dr. Akhtar Hassan is an Assistant Professor at the Centre of Advanced Study (CAS), Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University. He obtained his Ph.D. from the same institution in 2009. His research primarily lies in the field of Medieval Indian history, with a specialised focus on the history of science and technology, particularly alchemy, chemical knowledge, and scientific traditions. His work explores the transmission of scientific knowledge, techniques of production, and their cultural and intellectual contexts in medieval India. He has published research articles in various journals on diverse themes of the history of science. In addition, he has contributed chapters to edited volumes.
He possesses teaching experience across diverse academic institutions. Prior to his current position at Aligarh Muslim University (since April 2023), he served as Lecturer in History in the Directorate of Education, Delhi (2017–2023), and as Assistant Professor (Ad-hoc) at Shivaji College, University of Delhi (2013–2017). He also taught as a guest lecturer at Zakir Husain College, University of Delhi (2012-2013).
In addition to teaching, he has been engaged in administrative works. He has served as an Academic Counsellor with IGNOU and worked as an Academic Consultant at its Regional Centre in Aligarh. At AMU, he is actively involved in departmental committees, including admission processes, library committees, NAAC/IQAC activities, and event organisation.
