Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi, MBBS, DCH, MD (Community Medicine), FAIMER Fellow

​Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University. A community physician, medical educator, and FAIMER Fellow, he has over two decades of experience in public health, medical education, research, and health systems strengthening.

Before joining the faculty at Aligarh Muslim University, he served as a Surveillance Medical Officer with the World Health Organization (WHO) under the National Polio Surveillance Project, contributing to disease surveillance and public health initiatives. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to strengthening healthcare delivery through capacity building, community engagement, and evidence-based public health practice.

​Dr. Abedi is a National Trainer for several Government of India health programmes, including Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI), Navjaat Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (NSSK), and the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP). He has trained a large number of medical professionals, nursing personnel, and frontline healthcare workers across various states of India.

An accomplished medical educator, Dr. Abedi teaches undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and is actively involved in the training of nursing, AYUSH, Master of Public Health (MPH), and MBA (Hospital Administration) students. As a member of the Medical Education Unit, he plays an important role in faculty development, curriculum innovation, and the implementation of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME). He also coordinates the Family Adoption Programme and contributes significantly to interprofessional education and community-based learning.

Beyond academics, Dr. Abedi has held several important administrative and leadership positions. He currently serves as the University Health Officer and has been instrumental in promoting campus health, sanitation, preventive healthcare, and public health preparedness. He has also served as Liaison Officer for National Health Programmes at J.N. Medical College, Coordinator of the Red Ribbon Club, Programme Officer of the National Service Scheme (NSS), and President of the University ECO Club, reflecting his longstanding commitment to community service and nation building.

His research interests encompass community medicine, medical education, maternal and child health, nutrition, communicable diseases, and health systems research. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed research papers, supervised over 30 MD dissertations and multiple PhD scholars, contributed to funded research and consultancy projects, authored book chapters, and co-edited academic books. He has presented his work at numerous national and international conferences and has delivered invited lectures and keynote addresses at scientific meetings, workshops, and faculty development programmes.

A passionate advocate for community engagement and lifelong learning, Dr. Abedi combines academic excellence with a strong commitment to public service, mentoring future healthcare professionals while contributing meaningfully to public health policy, research, and practice.
