AMU Faculty Members Win Awards at International Public Health Conference
The Department of Community Medicine, JNMCH, AMU, proudly announced the outstanding achievements of its faculty at the International Conference on Public Health Innovations and Sustainable Development Goals (ICPHI-SDG 2026), held virtually from 13–15 May 2026 under the theme “Advancing Public Health and Health Equity: From Policy to Action in Public Health within the SDG Framework.”
Prof. Saira Mehnaz — Awarded Session Best Presenter for her paper “A Qualitative Exploration of Dietary Practices, Menstrual Awareness, and the Role of School-Based Behaviour Change Communication among Adolescent Girls.” Her research offered deep insights into adolescent health behaviours and stigma reduction.
Dr. Mohd Yasir Zubair — Honoured with both the Overall Best Presenter Award and Session Best Presenter Award for his paper “Translating the NCD Burden into Action: Bridging Evidence, Policy, and the SDG 3.4 Imperative in India and Beyond.” His work highlighted actionable strategies to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases in alignment with SDG 3.4.
These recognitions underscore the department’s commitment to advancing public health research and policy innovation. Winning both the overall and session awards in a single conference is a rare distinction, placing JNMCH, AMU in the international spotlight.

Dr. Saira Mehnaz Scores a Resounding Victory, Elected Vice-President of IMA Aligarh (2026-27) Aligarh: In a landmark achievement for the medical fraternity, Dr. Saira Mehnaz has emerged victorious and been elected as Vice-President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Aligarh Branch, for the prestigious term 2026-27.The final election results were officially declared on 30th March 2026 by Election Officer Dr. Umakant Gupta and Returning Officer Dr. S.P. Singh, following thorough scrutiny and withdrawals.Dr. Saira Mehnaz’s impressive win is being widely hailed as a powerful recognition of her outstanding dedication, clinical excellence, and steadfast commitment to the medical community. As Vice-President, she is expected to play a dynamic role in advancing IMA’s initiatives on healthcare excellence, doctors’ professional development, and impactful public health programs across Aligarh.Prof. Uzma Eram, Chairman, Department of Community Medicine, was among the first to extend her heartfelt congratulations, along with senior doctors and colleagues. Senior Resident shines at National Conference on Adult Immunization.
Dr. Syed Sohaib Hashmi, Senior Resident in the Department of Community Medicine, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, has secured Third Prize in the Overall Oral Presentation Category at ISAICON-2026, the 3rd National Conference of the Indian Society for Adult Immunisation, held at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (Dr. RMLIMS), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on 28–29 March 2026.
Dr. Hashmi presented his research titled “Barriers and Challenges in HIV Vaccine Development: A Scoping Review”. His work received wide appreciation for its scientific rigor, structured methodology, and relevance to contemporary public health priorities. The study offered a comprehensive synthesis of the multifaceted challenges in HIV vaccine development, highlighting barriers ranging from biological complexities and clinical trial limitations to broader public health and implementation issues.
The conference, themed “Immunisation for Life: Advancing Adult & Life-Course Vaccination in India,” brought together national and international experts, providing a platform for scholarly exchange and advancements in adult immunisation strategies.
This achievement reflects the continued academic excellence and growing research contributions of J.N. Medical College in the field of public health, and highlights the active role of its young researchers in addressing critical global health challenges.

AMU Faculty Selected for Prestigious International Medical Education Program (FAIMER® Assessment Institute) and Conference
Aligarh, April 2026: Dr. Saira Mehnaz, Professor, Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University, has achieved a significant academic milestone with her selection for the FAIMER® Assessment Institute Pilot – Monash, organized in collaboration with Monash University Malaysia.
This highly competitive international training program focuses on strengthening competencies in Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME), particularly in assessment, programmatic evaluation, and clinical teaching practices. Participation is limited, and selection reflects recognition of Dr. Mehnaz's contributions to medical education and her leadership role as Co-coordinator of the Medical Education Unit (MEU).
The FAIMER® Assessment Institute Pilot – Monash is facilitated by distinguished international faculty, including Dr. Eric Holmboe, President and Chief Executive Officer, Intealth; Dr. Lyuba Konopasek, Senior Vice President, Intealth and Executive Director, FAIMER; Both experts are U.S.-based leaders in medical education, along with JCSMHS, Monash University Malaysia Faculty members — lending the program exceptional academic credibility and global stature.
The program carries clearly defined learning outcomes. At the end of the training, participants will be able to describe key principles of outcomes-based education including programmatic assessment; identify and apply strategies for work-based assessment; describe and apply key issues in rater cognition and their implications for effective assessment; identify and apply strategies for effective clinical teaching; employ effective practices in work-based assessment, including direct observation and feedback; describe the development of an Individual Learning Plan; and develop a personal action plan for change in their own program.
In addition, Dr. Mehnaz's research paper titled "AI-Augmented Evaluation and Longitudinal Improvement of a Medical Foundation Course: A Mixed-Methods Educational Intervention Study" has been accepted for oral presentation at the prestigious Monash Malaysia–MAEMHS International Conference on Health Professions Education 2026. The conference brings together global experts in health professions education to discuss innovations, research, and best practices in teaching and assessment. Dr. Mehnaz's work highlights the integration of artificial intelligence in enhancing medical education outcomes — an emerging and impactful area of research.
The FAIMER institute sessions are scheduled in April 2026 and will include intensive training on outcomes-based education, programmatic assessment, and feedback skills, further strengthening institutional capacity upon her return.

Prof. Saira Mehnaz Completes Prestigious FAIMER Fellowship and Continues Contributions as Co-Faculty and Mentor, at ASU-MENA-FRI, Cairo (Egypt).
Prof. Saira Mehnaz, Department of Community Medicine at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has successfully completed the prestigious two-year Fellowship in Health Professions Education offered by Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research(FAIMER), USA.
The fellowship was conducted through the Ain Shams University–Middle East North Africa–FAIMER Regional Institute (ASU-MENA-FRI), based at Ain Shams University, Cairo. The programme focuses on educational leadership, curriculum development and innovative teaching methodologies in health professions education.
Prof. Mehnaz’s fellowship spanned from January 2024 to January 2026 and was completed under the guidance of senior FAIMER and ASU-MENA-FRI leadership. Following the completion of the fellowship, Prof. Mehnaz has been invited to continue her association with the programme as Co-Faculty and Mentor during its Instruction Phase. In this role, she will contribute to medical education training and web-based learning components, reflecting recognition of her expertise and mentorship by the international programme.
Congratulating her, Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine, Prof. Uzma Eram, said that Prof. Mehnaz’s achievement highlights the value of international academic collaborations in strengthening evidence-based and innovative medical teaching practices and brings distinction to AMU at the global level.
First prize in the poster presentation category at the national conference MCON’25
Dr. Mohammad Bilal, a final-year Junior Resident from the Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), secured the first prize in the poster presentation category at the national conference MCON’25.
Dr Bilal’s award-winning poster, titled “Dietary Fibre as Preventive Medicine: Unani and Modern Nutraceutical Perspectives on Plantago ovata in Community Health — A Narrative Review,” was presented under the guidance of Dr Ali Jafar Abedi, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine. The presentation highlighted the role of dietary fibre—particularly Plantago ovata (Isabgol)—as a preventive tool in community health by integrating classical Unani concepts with contemporary evidence from modern nutraceutical research.
The conference, MCON’25, was organised by the Department of Moalejat, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, and was held on December 13, 2025. The event witnessed participation from researchers, academicians, and clinicians from across the country, showcasing recent advances and interdisciplinary approaches in healthcare.
The Chairperson of the Department of Community Medicine, Prof. Uzma Eram, also congratulated Dr Bilal on this achievement and lauded his contribution, describing it as a matter of pride for the department and the institution.
Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi Conferred Prestigious FAIMER Fellowship at MAHE-FAIMER Decennial Convocation
Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University, has been awarded the prestigious FAIMER Fellowship at the Decennial Celebration and Academic Fest of the MAHE-FAIMER International Institute for Leadership in Interprofessional Education (M-FIILIPE), held at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. The Fellowship is an internationally recognized program that develops educational leaders in health professions education with a strong emphasis on innovation, scholarship, and community impact.
The Fellowship was formally awarded to Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi by Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M. D. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor, MAHE, Manipal, in the presence of Dr. Lyuba Konopasek (Senior Vice President, Intealth & Executive Director, FAIMER), Dr. Rashmi Vyas (Vice President, Intealth & Senior Director, FAIMER Global), Prof. John HV Gilbert (Professor Emeritus, University of British Columbia, along with all Regional Directors of FAIMER.
Dr. Abedi’s FAIMER Fellowship project, titled “Community-Based Interprofessional Training on Skills Regarding Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices to Undergraduate Medical Students through the Family Adoption Programme,” was showcased during the convocation for its innovation and strong community health relevance. The project focused on strengthening the skills of first-year medical students in communication, anthropometry, and health education, with special emphasis on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices. By embedding the initiative within the Family Adoption Programme (FAP) framework of the National Medical Commission, the project sought to align undergraduate medical education with community health priorities, address malnutrition at the grassroots level, and build sustainable models for improving maternal and child health outcomes.
On receiving the Fellowship, Dr. Abedi remarked that the recognition was both a personal honour and a professional responsibility. He extended special thanks to his colleagues in the Department of Community Medicine, particularly Prof. Saira Mehnaz, for their mentorship and support. He was warmly congratulated by Prof. Uzma Eram, Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine, and Prof. Mohd Habib Raza, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, AMU.
Dr. Abedi is also an active member of the Medical Education Unit (MEU) of the Faculty of Medicine, where he contributes to innovations in teaching, Implementation of Elective courses, and faculty development initiatives. Through the Fellowship, he now joins the global network of FAIMER Fellows committed to advancing health professions education and improving healthcare delivery worldwide.
VI Annual Conference of Epidemiology Foundation of India Organized by: Centre of Community Medicine and the Department of Microbiology, AIIMS New Delhi.
Under the esteemed leadership of Chairperson, Prof. Uzma Eram, and the supervision of Prof. Saira Mehnaz, the team of faculty and postgraduate residents of the Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College actively participated in the VI Annual National Conference of the Epidemiology Foundation of India (EFICON 2025), held from 11th to 13th November 2025, at AIIMS, New Delhi. The conference was organized by the Centre of Community Medicine and the Department of Microbiology, AIIMS New Delhi.
The event brought together experts, researchers, and academicians from across the country to discuss current developments in epidemiology, public health practice, and research methodologies. Our department made significant academic contributions through plenary talks, chairing scientific sessions, judging scientific posters, and achieving distinctions in quiz competitions.
Key Contributions from the Department:
Prof. Saira Mehnaz delivered a Plenary session, which focused on an evidence-based systemic review titled "AI Applications for Maternal and Child Health Access in Vulnerable Populations," a topic of critical global relevance. This comprehensive analysis explored how AI technologies offer unprecedented opportunities to address the persistent disparities in maternal and child health outcomes among vulnerable communities, where limited healthcare access remains a significant barrier. She also served as Chairperson for the Oral Presentation Session on Maternal and Child health.
Dr. Salman Shah, Assistant Professor, presented an oral presentation titled “Impact of Augmentation of Self-monitoring of Blood Glucose with Digital Therapeutic Intervention on Clinical Parameters in Type 2 Diabetes Patients of Urban Aligarh: A Randomized Controlled Trial.”
Dr. Sameena Ahmad, Assistant Professor, served as Chairperson Oral Presentation Session on Miscellaneous Topics, facilitating an engaging and productive scientific exchange.
Dr. Yasir Zubair, Assistant Professor, served as Chairperson for the Oral Presentation Session on Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices, and presented an oral presentation titled “Impact of school based eye health education on knowledge and practices among rural students in Aligarh: An intervention study”.
Dr. Danish Kamal, Senior Resident, served as a Judge for the Poster Presentation Session, evaluating research work presented by participants from institutions across India, and delivered an oral presentation titled “Effect of Health Education on Knowledge and Attitude Towards Substance Abuse Among School-Going Adolescents: A Cluster Randomized Trial.”
Dr. Syed Sohaib Hashmi, Junior Resident, presented an oral presentation titled “Nutritional adequacy beyond macronutrients: Dietary diversity and its determinants among PLHIV in northern India.”
Dr. Chandramouli Mitra and Dr. Shafia Shafiq, Junior Residents, secured Second Place in the prestigious PG Quiz Competition – EPIMIX-2025, a national-level quiz designed to test knowledge and application in epidemiology and public health, and presented oral presentations on Digital Health and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus respectively.
Dr. Riya presented oral presentation titled Prevalence and Determinants of Loneliness, Social Isolation, and Their Association with Depression Among Elderly in Aligarh.
The active participation and achievements of our faculty and residents reflect the department’s strong academic culture and commitment to excellence in public health education and research. Their contributions not only enhanced the scientific depth of the conference but also brought recognition to the institution at a national platform.
JNMC RESIDENTS EXCEL AT EFICON-2025, AIIMS NEW DELHI
Residents from the Department of Community Medicine, J. N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, delivered an outstanding performance at VIth Annual National Conference of the Epidemiology Foundation of India (EFICON-2025), hosted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi from 11th to 13th November, 2025.
Dr. Syed Sohaib Hashmi, JR-3, secured the First Prize in the Oral Presentation category under the Nutrition Session for his research titled “Nutritional Adequacy Beyond Macronutrients: Dietary Diversity and Its Determinants Among PLHIV in Northern India” under the guidance of Prof. Mohammad Athar Ansari and Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi. His presentation was commended by the judges for its scientific clarity, methodological rigor, and relevance to contemporary public health practice.
Further strengthening the department’s presence, Dr. Danish Kamal, Senior Resident, received the Third Prize for his oral presentation under the Adolescent & Under-5 Health Session for the study “Effect of Health Education on Knowledge and Attitude Towards Substance Abuse Among School-Going Adolescents: A Cluster Randomized Trial” under the guidance of Dr. Tabassum Nawab and Prof. Mohammad Athar Ansari. His research highlighted the importance of structured educational interventions in adolescent health promotion.
Similarly, Dr. Riya, Junior Resident (JR-1), was awarded the Third Prize in the Geriatric Health Session for her paper “Prevalence and Determinants of Loneliness, Social Isolation and Their Association with Depression Among Elderly in Aligarh” under the supervision of Dr. Tabassum Nawab, Prof. Mohammad Athar Ansari and Dr. Mohd. Yasir Zubair. Her findings emphasized the growing mental health challenges among the geriatric population and the need for strengthened social support systems.
The collective achievements of these Residents highlight the strong research temperament of J. N. Medical College, especially Department of Community Medicine, and the active engagement of its young scholars in addressing contemporary public health issues at national platforms.

Prof Uzma Eram Appointed Chairperson, Department of Community Medicine at J.N. Medical College, AMU
Professor Uzma Eram of the Department of Community Medicine, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Department of Community Medicine, JNMC for a period of three (03) years, effective from April 5, 2025.
Prof. Eram brings with her over two decades of experience in teaching and research in the field of Community Medicine. She has authored a book, Causes of Depression and its Remedies among the Elderly People in the Community and contributed to the Practical Manual on Community Medicine for MBBS Students. In addition, she has written chapters in two academic books and has to her credit about 70 research papers and 22 abstracts published in esteemed national and international peer-reviewed journals. She has actively participated in over 82 conferences, seminars, and symposia.
With a solid grounding in epidemiology, biostatistics, and research methodology, she plays a pivotal role in shaping academic frameworks and field-based public health interventions.
Prof Eram is also serving as the Member Incharge of the Rural Health Training Centre in Jawan, Aligarh. Beyond her academic and research pursuits, she is actively engaged in community outreach initiatives, health awareness campaigns, and collaborative projects aimed at improving health outcomes, particularly in underserved regions of Aligarh.

At JNMC, AMU, Aligarh, Prof. Saira Mehnaz is currently the Chairperson of the Department of Community Medicine. Prof. Mehnaz has a successful career in community health and preventive medicine. She has served her field with distinction and shown excellent leadership, scholarship, and service. Professor Saira Mehnaz was presented with the Fellowship by Dr. Purushottam Giri, a distinguished community medicine expert and Secretary General of IAPSM, Dr. A. M. Kadri, President IAPSM and other officer bearers were present at the event. At inaugural event, a prominent group of academicians, researchers, healthcare professionals, and residents eager to take part in the annual National IAPSM Conference were present. AMU DOCTORS’ TEAM PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AT KUALA LUMPUR
The 9th International Conference on
Public Health 2023 (ICOPH 2023) organized by The International Institute of
Knowledge Management (TIIKM) on “Preparedness in Public Health: Advancing
Technology, Equity and Strengthening Community” held on 03rd
-04th August 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Hybrid Platform, for
which, Department of Community Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was
one of the academic partners. It provided the opportunity to unite diverse
researches and case studies from all over the world, in parallel sessions. The
conference had more than 200 participants from over 40 countries, in which there
were 22 participants were from the Department of Community Medicine, including
faculty, Junior & Senior residents along with Prof. Saira Mehnaz, Chairperson,
Department of Community Medicine.
Plenary speech on the topic “Empowering Communities for Health Equity: The Transformative Role of Community Medicine in Public Health” was given by Prof. Saira Mehnaz. During which she mentioned the importance of Health Equity in public health to empower the community and that it can be seen through several perspectives of social cohesion, population health, ethical responsibility, economic benefits and social justice.
Dr. Tabassum Nawab (Assistant Professor), Dr. Sameena Ahmad (Assistant Professor), Dr. Yasir Zubair, Dr. Shivangi, Dr. Karthika P., (Senior resident), Dr. Iram Abid (junior resident), Dr. Hira Alam (junior resident) Dr. Danish Kamal (Junior resident) , Dr. Harapriya Natarajan (Junior resident), Dr. Jhilmil Agrawal (Junior resident) made oral presentations.
Prof. Saira Mehnaz was recognized for her planery speech, while Dr. Tabassum Nawab was awarded with best presentation of session under the theme of maternal health and best overall presentation in physical mode. Dr. Danish Kamal was awarded with best presentation of the session under the theme of adolescent and young adult health, while Dr. Jhilmil Agrawal was given the best presentation award for the session under the theme of health research. Under the virtual category, Dr. Safia Habib, department of Biochemistry, J.N, Medical college was awarded with overall best presentation.
Prof. Saira Mehnaz was a member of Evaluation Panel and also evaluated several conference sessions while Dr. Tabassum Nawab and Dr. Sameena Ahmad chaired a few sessions.
The conference highlighted the significance of preventive measures, healthcare improvement, and equitable access to medical resources. The conference participants had a great learning opportunity through interaction with their international counterparts which will help in their future research opportunities.

Dr. Nafis Faizi, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, participated in a dialogue meeting on “The global need for effective antibiotics-unlocking barriers for collective action” at Uppsala University, Sweden. The Uppsala dialogue was jointly organised by Uppsala University & ReAct- Action against Antibiotic Resistance.

9th International Conference on Public Health 2023 (ICOPH 2023)
The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIKM) alongwith International Association on Public Health & MAHSA University Malaysia has organized the 9th International Conference on Public Health 2023 (ICOPH 2023) “Preparedness in Public Health: Advancing Technology, Equity and Strengthening Community” ICOPH from 3rd to 4th August, 2023 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (India) is one of the academic partners for this conference.

World Health Day 2022
NEWS AND PUBLICATION OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Community Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, is organising the XXI ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF IAPSM UP & UK CHAPTER – 2018 – from 26th -27th October 2018.
Department of Community Medicine won the second prize for the activities carried out during World Breastfeeding Week-2017 celebrations which were held at urban and rural health training centers of the Department. The award was given at Annual 20th Conference of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine- UP & UK Chapter (IAPSMUPUKCON 2017) held at University of Medical Sciences, Saifai, Etawah. In the event, 13 medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand participated. Award was given by Brigadier T. Prabhakar Rao, Vice Chancellor of the University. Prof. Ali Amir Organizing Chairman of the event congratulated the whole team who participated in the activities especially Dr. Saira Mehnaz, Coordinator of the event. The team included Prof. M. Athar Ansari, Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi, Dr. Salman Shah, Dr. Suboohi Afzal, Dr. Tabassum Nawab, Dr. Nafis Faizi, Dr. Urfi, Dr. Sakeena Mushfiq and all Senior and Junior residents and Medico- Social Wokers.
J.N.Medical College also won the bid to host the next year State Annual Conference at A.M.U., Aligarh. The last conference of IAPSMUPUKCON was held at A.M.U. Aligarh in1994.
Prof. Ali Amir, Prof. M. Athar Ansari, and Dr. Saira Mehnaz chaired the scientific sessions. Dr. Saira Menaz and Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi (Executive Member of the Association) also presented the scientific papers. Dr. Samreen, Dr. Nikhat, Dr. Ambreen and Dr. Shaigan also presented research papers.
