Anis Ur Rehman Khan: A Brief Profile


Anis Ur Rehman Khan is Deputy Director Physical Education & Sports at University Games Committee Aligarh Muslim University, a significant and esteemed educational & sports institution established in 1920. Coming from a family of established sports players, he is a successful sportsperson at both the national and international levels.

Mr. Khan was born in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, from where his journey began. Then he moved to Aligarh for doing his Bachelor's in Economics. His education didn’t stop here. After completing his degree from Aligarh Muslim University, he pursued his further education and did NIS Diploma in Coaching (Patiala), Bachelors, and Masters in physical education from CSS (Meerut).

He has numerous individual awards & achievements which shine like a golden star on his shoulders. These include the Germany tour of 1986 as a member of the Indian Universities Hockey team. Also, he was an important member of the AMU hockey team from 1982 to 1987 in which the team won many national tournaments and played at its pinnacle. He lead the team to glory by Winning North Zone Intervarsity and achieving third place in All India Inter-University of 1984-85. His performance awarded him the captaincy of the AMU Hockey team in 1986-87. For his contribution to the university hockey club, he was awarded University Colour (The most prestigious award in the history of varsity sports) in 86. With that, he played twice in National Hockey Championship as a member of Indian Universities.

After having such a glorious career, He further gained experience as a coach. Having twenty years of work experience at the National and Inter-University levels. In his tenure, he lead the AMU Hockey team which won the All India Intervarsity Tournaments in 1996 & 2005-2006, with that winning the Pepsi Penalty Conner award (Rs: 10000/-) during the All India Nehru SAIL Hockey Tournament at Delhi. He was nominated by AIU Delhi as Selector of India Universities Hockey team to visit Russia from June 24 to July 02, 1996, & Indian Universities for Senior National Hockey Championship at Hyderabad 2005. In addition to that, he was a manager of the Indian Universities Hockey Team in the Federation Cup Hockey Tournament at Delhi 1997. He coached the Indian Universities Team at All India Nehru Hockey Tournaments at New Delhi and the Indian University Hockey team for XXIII DCM Shriram All India Hockey (Men) Tournament Kota (Rajasthan). Apart from that, he was nominated as observer & Selector for North Zone & All India Inter Universities Hockey tournament, All India Intervarsity Hockey Women Tournament held at LNIPE Gwalior during the session 2016-17, CBSC National Hockey Championship, and All India Intervarsity Hockey Tournament held at GNDU Amritsar 2012-13. In Guntur, he was appointed as a technical officer for Jr. National Hockey Championships by Indian Hockey Federation. During 2008-09, he was a selector and later appointed as manager of India Universities Hockey team which participated in National Level All India Hockey tournament at Rajnand Gaon (Chattisgarh) and Master Cup at Gwalior (MP). Indian Universities team was semi-finalist and runners-up respectively in the above tournament. Later he was appointed Manager Indian Universities team to participate in senior National Hockey Championship 2016-17 held at Safai Etwah (UP) and secured IV position.

During his reign as a coach at the AMU hockey club, it achieved a huge amount of trophies. Which Includes the Winning North Zone Intervarsity (Men) Tournament in 2018-19, 2013-14, 2003-04, and 1996-97. In 1996 they also go second place in the All-India Interversity Tournament. A lot of big names emerged under his supervision. These includes 2 International and 22 national players.

It is pertinent to mention that there was no women hockey team. In 2018, the first time the school’s girls were motivated to play hockey at university ground. This results that good hockey girls team produced by the club and the team is still representing Aligarh region with winning records.

Mr. Anis has always been highly appreciated for his professionalism, discipline and sense of justice in all his performed duties. Due to these and other numerous qualities he has been awarded an appreciation from the University authorities of AMU, Association of Indian Universities, Delhi and other various organizations. One of the examples comes in session 2012-13 during All-India Lawn tennis tournament, when Delhi and Punjab University filed a discrepancy against the AMU Lawn Tennis team. Mr. Anis resisted by properly drafting a case and presenting it before the observers, organizers, and other officials of Association of Indian Universities. The result being the protest was rejected and AMU went on winning the All-India Interversity tournament. His love and loyalty for the sports and the University remain indubitable.
