Objectives

The objectives of the National Service Scheme are broadly focused on outreach education for student volunteers and service to the nation.

Specifically, NSS seeks to enable student volunteers to:

1. Understand the community in which they work.

2. Understand themselves in relation to their community.

3. Identify community needs and problems and participate in problem-solving processes.

4. Develop a sense of social and civic responsibility.

5. Apply their knowledge to generate practical solutions to individual and community problems.

6. Develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities.

7. Gain skills in mobilising community participation.

8. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes.

9. Develop capacity to respond to emergencies and natural disasters.

10. Promote national integration and social harmony.

Motto of NSS

NOT ME BUT YOU

The motto highlights that the welfare of an individual ultimately depends on the welfare of society as a whole. It reflects the essence of democratic living and emphasizes selfless service, mutual respect, and consideration for fellow human beings.

NSS Symbol

The emblem of the National Service Scheme is inspired by the Rath (wheel) of the Konark Sun Temple. The wheel represents the cycle of creation, preservation, and release, symbolising continuity, dynamism, and the progressive outlook of youth.

The eight bars of the wheel correspond to the eight pahars in a 24-hour day, signifying round-the-clock commitment to service. The red colour denotes energy and youthful spirit, while navy blue represents the vast cosmos—reflecting NSS as a small yet meaningful contributor to the welfare of humankind.
