PROF. TARIQ MANSOOR: A BRIEF PROFILE

Prof. Tariq Mansoor is currently the National Vice President, B.J.P. and Member of Legislative Council, Uttar Pradesh Assembly (Nominated by Hon’ble Governor, UP) w.e.f April 2023 for a period of six years. Earlier he was Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (2017-2023) – a historic seat of learning established in 1920. Prior to that, he served as the Principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College & Hospital – the largest teaching and tertiary medical care centre in western U.P.– and also as Head of Department of Surgery in A.M.U. With about four decades of teaching, research, clinical and administrative experience, he has 115 publications to his credit and supervised thesis of 58 postgraduate medical students.

He was nominated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India as a Member of Padma Awards Committee, Govt. of India for the year 2023 and 2024 and was also a Member of the Medical Council of India – the apex regulator of medical education and profession in India – and also served on the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management (Lucknow), Governing Body of the Maulana Azad Education Foundation (Ministry of Minority Affairs, Govt. of India) and the National Monitoring Committee for Minorities Education, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India. He has been nominated by Education Ministry / UGC as member of Search cum Selection Committees for posts of Vice-Chancellor/Director of various Universities/Educational Institutions. He has also served on various committees constituted by the Ministry of Education/UGC on National Education issues such as “Online Teaching, “Online Examination” and “Promotion of Online Education” and “National Credit Framework” and as member of Academic Advisory Committee, NAAC, Bengaluru and Member, National Focus Group: Educational Technology for Schools.

During his tenure, an incumbent Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the AMU community after a gap of 64 years. President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind was Chief Guest at University Convocation in 2018. He represented India attending the first India-Indonesia Inter Faith Dialogue in Yogyakarta, Indonesia as part of delegation of Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India in 2018 and R20 International Religion Forum Summit (part of G-20 events in conjunction with the Indonesian Presidency of G-20) in Bali in 2022 as well as symposium on Higher Education in South Asia held in Istanbul, organised by Hollings Center for International Dialogue, Washington, USA in 2019.

He was elected President of the Association of Surgeons of India (UP), Secretary of Aligarh Muslim University Teachers' Association and thrice as Member of Executive Council of Aligarh Muslim University representing the teaching faculty. He has been conferred with "Two Life Time Achievement Award" for his distinguished public services and is a recipient of “Eminent Senior Surgical Teacher Award 2013" by Association of Surgeons of India (UP).

As Vice-Chancellor of AMU, he established College of Nursing, Para Medical College, Department of Cardiology and Centres for Bio Medical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Green & Renewable Energy and NHM Projects such as Paediatric Early Intervention Centre of Excellence, Paediatric Cardiac Evaluation and Cardiac Surgery Centre (PCECS), MCH Wing, Dara Shikoh Centre for Interfaith Understanding & Dialogue and obtained statutory approval for Institute of Pharmacy from the President of India.

During his term, AMU was accredited A+ Grade by NAAC and was among Five Central Universities granted Category II Autonomy by University Grant Commission. During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, new courses have been started such as D.M. (Cardiology), MCH (Neurosurgery), M.B.A. (Hospital Administration and Islamic Finance), Masters in Architecture, M.Tech in Solar Energy, Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Material Sciences, Green Energy and Sustainable Development, Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management, M.Voc (Hons), B.Tech in Food Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Automobile Engineering (Electrical Vehicles), M.Sc. in  Digital Science, Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, four new MD courses in Faculty of Unani Medicine, B.Sc. Nursing, B.Sc. in Para Medical Courses etc.

He instituted the Young Researcher and Innovation Awards. Smart Classroom and upgradation of digital infrastructure for online teaching and learning were successfully taken up in view of Covid-19 pandemic.  Under his guidance, JNMC Hospital played an important role in testing, treatment and vaccine trials related to Covid-19 Pandemic.

Prof. Mansoor has travelled widely and visited important educational and cultural institutions in North America, Europe, West Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa.

A keen tennis player, he has reading interests in education, history, international affairs and politics. His opinion pieces on wide range of issues have been carried by leading dailies and news-portals such as Indian Express, The Hindu, Hindustan Times,
ThePrint, Firstpost,Navbharat Times,AmarUjala,Inquilab and internationally by Khaleej Times (UAE).
