History

The department of Surgery was established in 1964. The Founding Chairman of the Department was Late Prof. S. Ammar Hasan. In 1971, MCI gave permission to start the Programme of M.S. in General Surgery and the first batch of PG students was examined in 1973. In 1981, the allied specialities (ENT, Anaesthesiology, Orthopedics) were separated from the Department. In 1989 MCh course in Plastic Surgery was started which further separated from Surgery department to form department of Plastic & reconstructive Surgery in 2005. In 2012, three Super specialty departments- Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, Cardio-thoracic and Vascular Surgery were established. Endoscopy Suite was established in 2005. Acquisition of advance laparoscopic equipment's were done for minimal access surgery. The department has organized many conferences, CME's, and workshops like UPASICON (2005, 2014, 2021), mid term IHPBA (2019), Surgery Update (2018, 2019, 2021), Bariatric Surgery Workshop (2018), Woundcarecon-2023, Woundcon-2024, Management of Breast Cancer (2025) extension lectures and others.

Introduction

The department of surgery has 11 faculty to carry out all the academic activities. Major thrust of the department is on teaching and learning of the undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduates (MS General Surgery) as per the National Medical Commission. Focus is on training and sensitization for the innovation and surgical research.

The emphasis is on imparting extensive theoretical and practical training to the junior residents not only through the faculty of the department but also by inviting eminent surgeons, clinicians, faculty from the allied disciplines.

We are doing advance surgical procedures in GI surgery, Minimal Access Surgery, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopic Procedures, Breast and Endocrine surgery, Urology and Oncology.

To provide innovation in surgical practice & translational research for better patient management.

To provide the highest level of patient care, specially to downtrodden of the society.

Our Vision

To enhance the infrastructure & functional status of the department of surgery in next five years at par to other pioneer institutions of the country.

In next five years by 2025, we want to develop super-specialities like Urology, Oncology, Surgical Gastroenterology & Minimal Access Surgery.

The training of the postgraduates and undergraduates has to be structured as per the current guidelines of the National Medical Commission.

To acquire the latest technology and training in surgical practice for better patient care. Areas to be developed are advanced 3D/4K Laparoscopic equipment's & procedures, endoscopic equipment like EUS, capsule endoscopy, LASER, development of Bariatric Surgery and Robotic Surgery.

Teaching

The curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate teachings & learning are followed as per National Medical Commission and adopted by our department.

There is a schedule of M.S. General Surgery teaching like morning seminar, ward round discussion, supervised hands on training of operative procedures, training of surgical skills in skills lab & small group discussions.

High Dependency Unit (HDU) is functioning in the surgical ward.

The surgery operation rooms (OT 1, 2, 3 & 4) have been upgraded for open, laparoscopic & urological surgeries.

Feedback

Feedback is taken often from UG, PG students and Patients regarding the quality of teaching and hospital services and appropriate actions are taken from time to time for betterment.
