Lecture held on Breast Reduction Surgery
The Department of Plastic Surgery, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, organised a lecture by Dr. Neha Chauhan, Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru, Karnataka, on “Breast Reduction Surgery”, while Dr Fahud Khurram, Chairman of the department, and Dr. Neha and Dr. Sarfaraz conducted a live operative workshop. Dr. Chauhan, a luminary in the realm of plastic surgery and an alumnus of J.N. Medical College, AMU, highlighted the physical and psychological challenges faced by individuals with disproportionately large breasts. Beyond the aesthetic concerns, she shed light on the debilitating pain, discomfort, and functional limitations that often accompany macromastia, compelling many individuals to seek surgical intervention for relief and improved quality of life. Prof. Imran Ahmad also provided valuable insights into the pivotal role that breast reduction surgery plays in addressing the challenges faced by patients grappling with breast enlargement. Earlier, welcoming the guest speaker, Dr. Fahud Khurram introduced Dr. Chauhan and described her journey from her formative years as a medical student to her current standing as a beacon of excellence in plastic and reconstructive surgery. World Organ Donation Day 2024
World Organ Donation Day observed The Department of Plastic Surgery, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized a lecture by Dr Noha Rahman (Senior Resident in the department) marking the World Organ Donation Day, which also witnessed a plantation of saplings reflecting growth and life. Dr. Rahman provided an overview of organ donation, with special emphasis on the often-overlooked area of skin donation. She highlighted the critical role that skin donation plays in the treatment of burn patients and explained that skin grafts are essential for the recovery and rehabilitation of individuals who have suffered severe burns. She also stressed the urgent need to establish a skin bank, emphasizing that a dedicated skin bank would ensure a readily available supply of skin grafts, which is crucial for timely and effective treatment of burn patients. In her presidential remarks, the chief guest, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Principal and CMS, J.N. Medical College, Prof Veena Maheshwari emphasized the significance of organ donation and urged the people to come forward and donate organs to needy patients. Earlier, formally welcoming the guest speaker, Dr. Mohd. Fahud Khurram, Chairperson, Department of Plastic Surgery, highlighted the complexities of vascularized composite tissue transplantation, emphasizing its transformative impact on reconstructive surgery. He discussed details of how advancements in hand, face, abdominal wall, and penoscrotal region transplants, in addition to skin, have not only restored essential functions and enhanced aesthetics but also reignited hope and confidence in patients suffering from severe disfigurements and trauma. A photography competition was also held on this occasion which was judged by the chief guest, Prof Veena Maheshwari. World Burns Week 2024
World Burns Week observed ALIGARH November 11: The Department of Plastic Surgery, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized an awareness programme to mark the World Burns Week 2024. In his welcome address, Dr M. Fahud Khurram, Chairman of the department, said that the week is being observed all around the globe under the aegis of International Society for Burn Injuries, and it envisions a world where burns are prevented, and access to timely and effective care is equitable - regardless of location, income, gender, age or ability. He emphasized the intricate challenges of treating burn injuries and the collaborative spirit essential for burn care. He stated that burns are not just wounds; they impact every aspect of a patient’s life and require not only expert clinical care but also deep empathy and resilience from each caregiver involved. Prof Vinita Puri, Head, Department of Surgery, KEM Medical College, Mumbai, while addressing online, shared her experience in treating burns. The Principal of the Nursing College, AMU, Prof Farha Azmi underscored the commitment and skill demonstrated by the nursing staff in burn care. She said that our nurses are often the closest to patients, providing both clinical care and emotional support. Prof M. Yaseen, Former Chairman, Department of Plastic Surgery highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary approach in burn treatment, while applying modern advancements in reconstructive techniques and rehabilitation. He spoke on the transformative power of integrative burn care. Noted plastic surgeon in Aligarh, Dr Paritosh said that the World Burns Week serves as a timely reminder of our responsibility to prevent burns through community education and promote effective and compassionate care for those affected. Prof Imran Ahmad, a senior faculty member in the department, in a video message, delved into the latest advancements in burn care and shared insights into the modern treatment techniques. Dr. Sheikh Sarfraz Ali stressed the importance of multidisciplinary collaborative efforts in successful burn treatment. He applauded the synergy between surgeons, nurses and other medical staff. World Burns Week 2025 Observed at AMU’s J.N. Medical College with Awareness and Compassion ALIGARH, November 7:The Department of Plastic Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University, observed World Burns Week 2025 from November 3 to 7, with a series of academic, community, and awareness activities under the theme “From Burns to Recovery: Prevention is the Key.” The weeklong observance aimed to promote burn prevention, early intervention, and comprehensive rehabilitation for survivors. The inaugural ceremony was held in the presence of Prof. Mohd Mohsin Khan, Pro Vice Chancellor, who commended the department for raising awareness about burn injuries and called for compassion and community participation to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly women and children. Prof. Mohd Khalid, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, lauded the creative and clinical excellence of plastic surgery as a discipline, while Prof. S. Amjad Ali Rizvi, Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent, praised the department’s outreach and assured continued institutional support to strengthen burn care services. Speaking on “Advanced Dressings and Skin Substitutes in Wound Healing,” the keynote speaker, Prof. Sameek Bhattacharya, Head, Department of Plastic Surgery, Dr. RML Hospital, New Delhi, and National Vice President, National Academy of Burns, India, shared insights on innovations in burn management and NABH accreditation practices. Reflecting on the observance, Dr.Fahud Khurram emphasized the evolving role of modern burn care, encompassing early excision, grafting, biological dressings, and reconstructive surgery. “Plastic surgery is not just skin deep, it restores hope, confidence, and humanity,” he said, adding that plastic surgeons collaborate across disciplines to manage complex wounds, congenital anomalies, and post-traumatic reconstructions. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Sarfraz Ali. Throughout the week, a series of outreach and educational programmes were conducted. School awareness sessions at AMU Girls’ School and nearby institutions educated students on fire safety, burn prevention, and first aid. The interactive demonstrations were led by Dr. Surabhi, Dr. Kriti, Dr. Akanksha, Dr. Shikha, and students from the Wound Care and Dressings and Unani Pharmacy units, coordinated by Mohd Waseem Ahmad. Workshops for nursing and paramedical staff focused on the multidisciplinary approach to burn management and team-based patient care. A tree plantation drive symbolizing hope and healing also marked the occasion, with participation from faculty, residents, and students. At the Rural Health and Training Centre (RHTC), Jawan, the department organized a special awareness programme. World Plastic Surgery Day 2024
World Plastic Surgery Day Celebrated Aligarh, July 15: The plastic and reconstructive surgery week under the aegis of the Department of Plastic Surgery, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University concluded with the celebration of the World Plastic Surgery Day on 15th July. Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh, President elect APSI was the chief guest of the event. In his welcome address Dr. M.F. Khurram, Chairperson, Department of Plastic Surgery gave an insightful presentation encompassing a great deal of knowledge about plastic surgery and its contribution to society. There was a showcasing of a documentary curated and compiled by the Senior Residents of the Department, showing follow-up patients who have benefitted in a life-changing manner after being operated by the Plastic Surgeons of J.N. Medical College Hospital, AMU in recent years. The Chief Guest Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh enlightened the audience by his expertise in cleft lip and palate treatment, burns and reconstructive surgeries. Dr. Singh highlighted his commitment to comprehensive cleft care. As Director of G S Memorial Hospital, Varanasi, his leadership has shaped global standards in cleft lip and palate treatment, burns and reconstructive surgeries. His impactful work has been recognised internationally through accolades such as Oscar winning documentary ‘Smile Pinki’ and national geographic AIB award winning ‘Burned Girl’. During the programme, dignitaries such as Professor A.H. Khan, Professor L.M. Barriar, Professor M. Yaseen, and staff from the OPD, OT complexes and Emergency Trauma Centre were felicitated. The Department of Plastic Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), observed World Plastic Surgery Day with the grand conclusion of a week-long series of academic and public engagement activities under the theme “Transforming Lives, Restoring Hope.”
Chief Guest Prof. Mohit Sharma, Head of Plastic Surgery at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, and a pioneer in hand transplantation in India, delivered the keynote address. He shared insights into the technical and emotional complexities of reconstructive surgery, including the country's first planned face transplant, inspiring students and faculty alike.
AMU Registrar Mr. Mohammad Imran (IPS) urged young surgeons to pursue advanced training and reaffirmed the university’s support for expanding plastic surgery services. Prof. Habib Raza, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, commended the department's contributions to trauma and reconstructive care.

He informed that the weeklong celebration featured specialized OPDs, awareness drives, and academic discussions on burns, trauma, and congenital anomalies, with active participation from students and clinicians.

Hand on Workshop on Maxillofacial Trauma AMU Workshop Advances Surgical Skills in Facial Trauma Management ALIGARH, March 21: The Department of Plastic Surgery, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University conducted a one-day CMF (Cranio-Maxillofacial) Course on Facial Trauma Hands-on Workshop, providing a unique learning experience for delegates through state-of-the-art simulation and hands-on training. Chief Guest, Prof. Habib Raza, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, praised the department for organizing such a valuable educational event. Guest of Honor, Dr. Shashank Chauhan, Additional Professor of Plastic Surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi, appreciated the hands-on approach and remarked, “Workshops like these bridge the gap between theory and practice, equipping participants with skills that are directly applicable in real-world scenarios.” Prof. Imran Ahmad emphasized the international standards of the training and the use of advanced equipment provided by Johnson & Johnson, ensuring a cutting-edge learning experience. Plastic Surgery Department Observes National Cleft Day 2025, Advocates for Smiles without Barriers
ALIGARH February 11: The Plastic Surgery Department, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organised the screening of the Oscar-winning documentary “Smile Pinki” to mark the global observance of National Cleft Day, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about cleft lip and cleft palate while advocating for improved access to treatment and support for affected individuals. The day highlights the importance of early medical intervention, comprehensive care, and social inclusion for children and adults living with cleft conditions.
In his welcome address, Dr. M. F. Khurram, Chairperson of the Plastic Surgery Department, provided valuable insights into cleft conditions and their treatment timeline. He said that Cleft lip and palate are among the most common congenital conditions, affecting one in every 700 births worldwide.
“Without timely medical and surgical care, children with cleft conditions may face challenges with feeding, speech, hearing, and social integration. However, with proper treatment, they can lead healthy and fulfilling lives,” said Dr. Khurram, while emphasising the crucial role of parental engagement in addressing concerns and managing the condition effectively.
Prof. Imran Ahmad, Director of the Smile Train Project, spoke about the vital role the initiative plays in managing cleft cases. He highlighted that this year’s theme, “Smiles without Barriers,” underscores the need for equitable healthcare access, irrespective of geographical or financial constraints. Various awareness campaigns, free medical consultations, and community engagement initiatives are being organised worldwide to support this cause.
He urged parents and attendants of affected children to seek timely intervention, emphasising the transformative impact of cleft repair surgeries and speech therapy. He also engaged with parents by answering their queries, clarifying doubts, and distributing gifts and lunch boxes to the children.

Happy World Smile Day
The Aligarh Muslim University chapter of the World Smile Train programme observed the World Smile Day on October 4 by illuminating the iconic Baab-e-Syed, the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College building and the Department of Plastic Surgery building with blue light, joining the attempt to win a Global Guinness World Record by lighting 56 landmark buildings across Smile Train programme countries for at least 10 minutes. This programme was initiated to celebrate the completion of 2 million Smile Train-supported cleft surgeries worldwide, including 700,000 surgeries in India, said Prof Imran Ahmad (Department of Plastic Surgery, JNMC), the Project Director, Smile Train Programme, USA. He said that the landmark illumination programme was undertaken to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Smile Train project, of which the Aligarh Muslim University is a part with cleft lip surgeries being performed at the Department of Plastic Surgery.
