BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The Department of Physical Education (also known by its initials Physical Health and Sports Education) was started with a grant from U.G.C. vide letter No. F-2-1/88(SPE) dated May 31st, 1988. This grant was made available for the introduction of 3 years Degree Course in Physical Health and Sports Education.

The Department was started during 1990-91 session. The first batch of B.A. (Hons.) in Physical Health and Sports Education has passed out in 1992-1993 session. The Master of Physical Education (M.P.E.) and Ph.D. courses were started during 1994-1995 and 1999-2000 respectively. The courses of M.P.E. and B.P.E. have been discontinued from the session 2008-2009 and 2009-10 respectively. The Department has introduced B.P.Ed. course in 2007-08 with an intake of 50 seats and also introducing M.P.Ed. course in academic session 2011-2012 with an intake of 30 seats as per the guidelines of the National Council of Teacher Education (N.C.T.E.) https://ncte.gov.in/website/index.aspx
All the above courses are being run in the Department to fulfill the need for trained leadership in Physical Education.

The department has currently 181 bonafide students in its two-year Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.), two years Master of Physical Education (M.P.Ed.) courses and Ph.D. Programme.

The Department has been actively pursuing research in different fields with present-day faculty positions of 05 Professors, 01 Associate Professor and 03 Assistant Professor, and 01 Assistant Director of Physical Education.

The Department has a growing research programme in the areas of sports biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor skills & sport psychology, physical activity and health, sports management, and sports sociology.

During the last five years the Department has published 77 research papers in referred Journals. The department has organized 06 workshops during the last five years in Physical Education and Sports Sciences.

Five UGC Major Research Projects, one MHRD Research Project, two Minor Research Projects & one UGC-SAP (DRS-I) Programme have already been completed by the faculty members & research scholars.

The Department has a well-furnished and spacious Seminar Library with a very rich collection of books featuring:- Text Books (5223 Nos.), Journals (155 Nos.).

The Department of Physical Education offers an impressive range of facilities and equipment, which operate at the cutting edge of Physical Health and Sports Sciences.
