- To provide an understanding of language as a formal system shaped by cognitive, biological, cultural and social factors. 
- To develop an understanding of the concepts, theories, and methodologies used in qualitative and quantitative analyses of linguistic structure and patterns of language use. 
- To create sensitivity towards linguistic diversities and multilingualism, and their implications in the society.

- Understand how languages are structured, including the organization of phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic systems. 
- Have knowledge of biological basis of language and various language disorders that have an implication in education. 
- Collect, organize and analyze linguistic data from diverse languages and form hypotheses about language structure. 
- Apply linguistic tools and data in other disciplines like language teaching, computations, speech therapy, forensic sciences and others. 
- Develop an awareness regarding language variation and change, linguistic diversities, multilingualism and their role in constructing social identity.
