Vision
The Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, is committed to becoming a center of excellence in education, research, and clinical practice. We aim to groom medical students into professionals who possess both clinical competence and social responsibility, while fostering a research-oriented mindset.

Department Profile
- History: Originally part of the Department of Surgery since 1962, the Department of Anaesthesiology was established as a separate entity in November 1981 by the founder chairperson, Prof. Tausifa Zameer Khan (1981-1993).

- Faculty: The department boasts 15 faculty members with specialized training in critical care medicine, cardiac anaesthesia, neuro-anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, pain management, and trauma management.
- Awards: Faculty members have received numerous prestigious awards, including the Commonwealth Fellowship, Best Academician and Researcher, and the Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Distinguished Professor & Researcher Award 2023, among others.
Academic and Clinical Programs
- Courses:

- Teaching Program: A robust teaching schedule from 8:00 am to 9:00 am, five days a week, including seminars, clinical scenarios, journal reviews, and case presentations.
- Facilities: State-of-the-art teaching facilities including a smart classroom with an interactive panel, CPR training manikins, airway management trainers, and lumbar puncture trainers, USG trainer, etc
Clinical Services
- Patient Care: The department provides anaesthesia services to over 12,000-14,000 patients annually
The department runs a well-equipped Main ICU and Trauma ICU, providing round-the-clock comprehensive critical care services. These units are staffed by trained intensivists and supported by advanced monitoring systems, ventilators, point-of-care diagnostics, and multidisciplinary support, ensuring high-quality care for critically ill and trauma patients.
The Pain Clinic of the Department of Anaesthesiology, J.N. Medical College and Hospital, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), was established in 2005 with the vision of providing comprehensive, evidence-based care for patients suffering from chronic pain. Over the years, it has evolved into the most advanced pain management centre in the district, serving patients from Aligarh and the surrounding regions. The clinic functions three days a week and caters to approximately 100–150 patients per week, reflecting the increasing demand for its specialised services for patients suffering from chronic pain conditions, neuropathic pain and cancer pain.
The clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art radiofrequency ablation technology, high-resolution ultrasonography systems, and C-arm fluoroscopic guidance, enabling precise and safe image-guided interventional pain procedures, including diagnostic and therapeutic minimally invasive pain and spine interventions, including epidural injections, sympathetic blocks, interventions for joint pain, and radiofrequency treatments for patients suffering from chronic and cancer pain. It also offers advanced regenerative therapy including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, use of visco supplements for musculoskeletal and degenerative joint conditions. The clinic also incorporates AI-based Virtual Reality (VR) therapy as an innovative, non-pharmacological modality to complement conventional pain management, enhancing pain relief, functional recovery, and patient engagement. A wide spectrum of chronic pain disorders, including cancer pain, neuropathic pain, back pain, musculoskeletal pain, and facial pain, is managed through a multidisciplinary and patient-centred approach.
With a strong emphasis on minimally invasive interventions, innovation, and patient safety, the clinic has consistently achieved excellent outcomes, with up to 80% of patients experiencing significant pain relief and improved quality of life.
- Specialties: Services include neuro-anaesthesia, cardiac anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, pain management, and anaesthesia for various surgeries (plastic, reconstructive, GI, orthopaedic, gynaecological, obstetrical, ophthalmic, ENT, and dental surgeries). Additionally, Non-Operating Room Anaesthesia (NORA) is available three days a week.
- Equipment: All operation theatres are equipped with modern workstations, multichannel monitors, bronchoscopes, syringe pumps, and AI-aided ultrasonography machines.
The department’s Pain Clinic features cutting-edge radiofrequency technology, advanced ultrasonography systems, and C-arm fluoroscopic guidance, facilitating accurate and safe image-guided interventional nerve block procedures.
Academic Activities and Workshops
- The department organizes various academic events and workshops, such as FCCS courses, ACLS courses, CME on sepsis, and workshops on mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, and interventional pain management.
-In continuation of its commitment to academic excellence and national collaboration, the Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, has the distinct honour of hosting ICACON 2026, the prestigious annual national conference of the Indian College of Anaesthesiologists. This landmark event will bring together eminent faculty, clinicians, researchers, and trainees from across the country to engage in high-quality scientific discourse, skill-based workshops, and knowledge exchange.
