Mohammad Afzal teaches human genetics, population genetics, biostatistics and endocrinology.. His research is focused on (a) the study of consanguinity, human and population genetics and genetic toxicology and pharmacology ,with special reference to genetic disorders, traits, populations and ethnicity of North Indians, besides chemoprevention and cancer, (b) the use of cytogenetic, biochemical, and molecular markers and statistical tools and techniques in the study of biological/ clinical /environmental samples and sequencing and bioinformatics  for identification of polymorphisms, mutations and sequences and characterization of genes and proteins (c) animal model/alternative models(in vitro studies ) and (d) interdisciplinary studies. He has published over 198 papers in refereed journals(few book chapters and reviews) including those in Pediatric Research (Nature), Behavior Genetics, Clinical Genetics, Applications of Clinical Genetics,Frontiers in Genetics ,Neuro-oncology, PLoS ONE, BMC Cancer, Tumour Biology, American Journal of Human Biology, Toxicology Letters,Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology,  Annals of Epidemiology. His citations count 2959, H-index 31, and i10-index 83. He has supervised 22 PhDs, 4 MPhils and 15 MSc theses. He has conducted research projects from ICMR, UGC, UPCST and MAAS (NGO) and delivered invited talks and chaired sessions in national and international conferences... He was the recipient of Scientist of the Year Award (2006) from National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi. He is the founding chief editor of Biology and Medicine, Aligarh being published regularly since 2009, now published by Longdom publishing  group. Recently he was included among the five most cited authors of the university by Elsevier group during the period 2008 through 2012. He got his training at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (1985-1986, two years as Research Assistant) and CCMB, Hyderabad (4 weeks) and his alma mater is Bhagalpur University where he studied for his Doctoral (1984), Masters (1980) and Bachelors degree (1976) in Zoology. Mohammad Afzal has been post-doc under Professor IC Verma and collaborator with Professor Subrata Sinha both of AIIMS, New Delhi . His training under Dr Lalji Singh, the pioneer of DNA fingerprinting in India has great scientific value. He has written extensively in English, Urdu and Hindi articles and columns on social, scientific and cultural issues in reputed journals, magazines and newspapers.
