Dr. Monirul Islam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, India. He joined the department in January 2020 and has been serving as a regular faculty member since February 2024. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Aligarh Muslim University in 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Qamrul Hasan Ansari, with a dissertation titled "Generalized Convexity and Nonsmooth Variational Inequalities on Manifolds." He also earned his M.Phil. in Mathematics from AMU, where his research focused on Weak Sharp Solutions for Variational Inequalities.
Dr. Islam's research interests include nonlinear analysis, variational inequalities, equilibrium problems, fixed-point theory, convex optimization, and optimization on Riemannian and Hadamard manifolds. His research has contributed to the development of optimization theory and algorithms in nonlinear spaces, with particular emphasis on equilibrium theory, variational analysis, and manifold optimization. He has published extensively in leading international journals, including Applicable Analysis, Journal of Nonlinear and Convex Analysis, Numerical Algorithms, Scientific Reports, Journal of Inequalities and Applications, Carpathian Journal of Mathematics, and Mathematics.
His research has received international recognition, with more than 150 citations in both Web of Science and Scopus and an H-index of 5. He maintains active research collaborations with leading mathematicians worldwide, particularly with Prof. Jen-Chih Yao, and has undertaken several research visits to Taiwan, including to National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung Medical University, and China Medical University, where he has worked as a Visiting Scientist.
At AMU, Dr. Islam teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Real Analysis, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Topological Vector Spaces, and Variational Analysis and Optimization. He has also developed a 4-credit SWAYAM MOOC course on Metric Spaces, reflecting his commitment to innovative teaching and digital learning. He supervises research projects at the Ph.D., M.Sc., and undergraduate levels in optimization and nonlinear analysis.
Dr. Islam is actively involved in academic publishing and currently serves as Managing Editor of four international journals: Optimization Eruditorum, Fixed Point Methods and Optimization, Applicable Nonlinear Analysis, and the Journal of Decision Making and Healthcare. He also serves as a reviewer for several international journals and contributes reviews to Mathematical Reviews (MathSciNet). He is a Life Member of the Indian Mathematical Society and the Working Group on Generalized Convexity.
In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities, Dr. Islam has held several important administrative positions at AMU. He currently serves as Warden of Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall and Warden-in-Charge of Sports (Indoor and Outdoor Games). He has also served as Acting Provost, a member of the admissions committee, and a B.Tech. entrance examination observer, and organizer of international conferences hosted by the Department of Mathematics.
Dr. Islam remains committed to advancing research in nonlinear optimization, equilibrium theory, and manifold optimization while fostering academic excellence through teaching, research collaboration, editorial leadership, and service to the mathematical community.
