Department of Industrial Chemistry

Introduction

The department of Industrial Chemistry is the new  120th department of the University under the Faculty of Science. It is created by the bifurcation of the main Department of Chemistry on 30th January 2023 through the notification of the University. The Hon'ble President of India in her capacity as Visitor of Aligarh Muslim University has been pleased to approve the amendment to Statute 20(2)(c) of the Statutes of the Aligarh Muslim University of the establishment of a separate Department of Industrial Chemistry under Faculty of Science of AMU Aligarh.

Scope of Industrial Chemistry Courses

Scientists, Pharmacists, lab managers, research associates, teachers etc. The job scope for both B.Sc. & M.Sc. Industrial Chemistry graduates is in greater demand than ever.

Summary of Progress of Students

The programs of Industrial Chemistry are fully job oriented with a very good placement record and the students of Industrial Chemistry are being admitted for higher studies in Institutes of International repute. Some of the institutes are Dakin University (Australia), Fribourg University (Switzerland), Naikai University (China), University of Paris (France), SUD France, Universiti Sains Malaysia, University of British Colombia (Canada) etc. Furthermore, few students have been awarded Common Wealth Fellowship, Indo Canadian Shastri Fellowship, Erasmus Mundus Fellowship etc. In addition to that the students are also qualifying NET, GATE, TOEFL and GRE examinations.

Brief History of the Department

Its journey started in 1993 when B.Sc. (Hons) in Industrial Chemistry started as a vocational program. The M.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry program started in 1996 under the coordinatorship of Prof. Firoz Ahmad who worked hard to reach it to its newer heights. Professors Mohd. Mushfiq, Rafiuddin and Abdur Rauf have later joined as coordinators of these programs of Industrial Chemistry and did their best.

In 2012, in a meeting of the Board of Studies, it was unanimously passed to have a separate department of Industrial Chemistry. However, it could not be processed for unknown reasons. In 2014, Prof. Anees Ahmad made a bold decision and joined as Professor of Industrial Chemistry by sacrificing his seniority of 10 years and started the efforts for the creation of the department. The then Vice Chancellor Mr. Zameeruddin Shah agreed to the proposal and gave a green signal to the project. The matter was passed by different bodies of the University such as the Faculty meeting, Academic Council, Executive Council, University Court and the Finance Committee and finally sent to MHRD/UGC in 2017.

The matter could not proceed and Prof. Qazi Mazhar, then Dean Faculty of Science, has taken special interest and persuaded the Vice Chancellor to get it done. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor has taken a keen interest in it and got it done by taking personal interest and efforts.
