Project Title :
The project entitled "Effect of Millet supplementation on anthropometric indices, biochemical, inflammatory and body composition indices in patient with pre-diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes mellitus". Diabetes is on a very pertinent medical problem of National concern. Diabetes Mellitus takes a serious toll on quality of life effecting the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing exhausting 5-25% of an average Indian household earning. The disease is however being highly reversible if addressed at an early stage. Indian System of medicine specifically holistic healing can potentially address the modifiable risk factors responsible for the disease. The project is aimed at to control diabetes mellitus and reversible prediabetes in order to reduce the unnecessary burden on health care system. Ilaj-bil-Ghiza (dietotherapy) is a promising ancient Unani mode of treatment having infallible significant role in the management of lifestyle diseases. Scientific studies have shown considerable reduction in complications in diabetic patients with appropriate diet. This fact underscores the relevance of dietary intervention in the management of a disease as dreadful as diabetic. This project will evaluate the effect of finger millet in pre-diabetics, newly diagnosed diabetics and diabetic already on treatment. Apart from providing nutrition, Finger Millet is low in carbohydrate having low glycemic index, it counters insulin resistance, and also helpful in dyslipidemia, fatty liver and cardiovascular manifestations which are the late sequel of diabetes mellitus.
