11-NOV-2013: The Aligarh Muslim University today signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio, USA.
An eight-member delegation from the Ohio State University (OSU) led by Prof. William Brustein, Vice Provost today met the AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah at his office. The other dignitaries present on the occasion included Brigadier (Retd.) Syed Ahmad Ali, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Gr. Cap. (Retd.) Shahrukh Shamshad and Deans of Faculty of Science and Engineering and Technology.
According to the MoA, a joint OSU-AMU Centre of Excellence in STEM Education and Research will be established at AMU. The Centre will comprise of digitally equipped classrooms with internet connectivity and computers. Ideally, each classroom would be equipped with a large centrally located and computer connected projection high-definition TV screen. Internet connection could enable lectures to be webcast in real time to distant locations for students at other colleges and schools. Pre-recorded on-line lectures from OSU as well as other major universities would also be utilized for instruction.
The facilities would be utilized for instruction to AMU students in STEM subjects. Classes would be conducted by OSU-AMU instructors and by the selected Center Fellows in training as new faculty under the STEM-ER Project.
Both the institutions would develop a novel two-year STEM-ER programme for Indian graduate students to train them in teaching STEM subjects to undergraduate students and conduct state-of-the-art research.
AMU and OSU will award dual degrees to the selected students in STEM education at OSU and graduation research at AMU.
The centre of excellence will also initiate interdisciplinary collaborative projects in advance research and innovation and formulize a comprehensive Indo-US inter-university consortium of leading Indian and US universities.
The centre will prepare a report on national capacity building in SATEM faculty training and research in India to facilitate large scale Indo-US collaboration.
Under the MoA, the OSU Graduate School will contribute a substantial cost-sharing component of this proposal up to approximately $12.000, providing tuition awards and fee allocations for four AMU students for two semesters, each during one year of their studies at OSU. AMU will provide local hospitality at the University guesthouse for visiting instructors and researchers from OSU including office space and resources.
The MoA was signed by Brig. S. Ahmad Ali, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Gr. Cap. Shahrukh Shamshad, Registrar AMU from AMU side and Dr. William I. Brustein, Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs and Mr. Geoffrey S. Chatas, Senior Vice President of Business and Finance and CFO from OSU side.
The delegation also visited Department of Physics, Nanotechnology Centre and Department of Wildlife Sciences and interacted with teachers and students.
Prof. Wasi Haider, Convener, STEM-ER project thanked the delegates and hoped this day will be remembered as a historic event in the University.
