05-OCT-2017: AMU Observes 'Swachhta Pakwada' and 'Swachhta Hi Seva' programmes
Aligarh, October 5: Various activities were undertaken by the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) teachers, students and other staff to clean the varsity campus and other places in the city during the 15-day nation-wide 'Swachhta Pakwada', (Cleanliness drive) and 'Swachhta Hi Seva' (Cleanliness is Service).
Prof Asma Ali, the provost of varsity's Begum Sultan Jahan Hall with wardens, students and staff organised a massive cleaning drive of the hall premises. The residential hall also organised awareness programmes such as an essay competition and a cleanest-room competition. Dr Ali Jafar Abedi (University Health Officer), who was the judge in the essay competition, delivered a lecture on 'Importance and Application of Hygiene and Cleanliness in our Daily Lives'.
Dr Abedi with the university NSS cadets also led a cleaning drive in the slum areas near the IG Hall premises on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The University Health Office distributed soaps to the residents of these areas. Special awareness programmes on cleaning were also organised.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) conducted the 'Swachhta Pakwada' with a drive to clean the department and adjoining areas and by planting tree saplings in the JNMC premises. The department also administered an oath for cleaner surroundings. On the occasion, Prof Naiyer Asif (Chairperson, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery) said that it is necessary to stay hygienic for good health. Prof MKA Sherwani, Prof Mazhar Abbas, Prof Abdul Qayyum Khan, Dr Latif Zafar Jilani and other faculty members actively participated to make the drive successful.
Prof Mohd Yaseen (Chairperson, Department of Plastic Surgery) led a committee which included Prof A H Khan, Prof Imran Ahmad, Dr M Fahud Khurram, Dr Adil Ali Mahmud and Dr Brajesh Pathak to conduct the 'Swachhta Pakwada' in the department and adjoining areas. The committee with other teachers, students and staff conducted the cleanliness and tree plantation drives. They also took a pledge to keep the nation clean.
Dr Massom Raza, the chairperson of the Department of Library and Information Science with students, teachers and staff organised a 'Clean Campus Day' and 'Green Campus Day' to observe 'Swachhta Hi Seva'. He also administered a pledge in the department to keep the surroundings clean.
The resident students and staff of the Bibi Fatima Hall observed the Swachhta Hi Seva' campaign with the cleaning of the hall area, awareness programmes and tree plantations. Prof Ghazala Parveen (Provost) with wardens Dr Sartaj A Tyagi and Ms Rayena Reza led the campaign and administered a pledge.
Faculty and students of Women's College participated in the Swachhta Pakwada' by conducting lectures on the campaign. A Green Campus Day was also observed in the campus with tree plantations. Prof Naima K Gulrez (Principal) said that students, staff and teachers of the college have made the campaign successful with their determination and enthusiasm. An extempore speech competition on the topic of 'Health is Wealth and Cleanliness is next to Godliness' was a major highlight of the activities during the Pakwada campaign in the college.
