13-JUN-2018: First ever Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication procedures done in JNMC
Aligarh, June 13: Peculiarities and problems of public health care system often leave patients with no options but to reach private hospitals where they end up paying exorbitant bills. However, the Department of Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) is committed in changing perceptions as its surgeons have successfully performed three affordable and equitable quality Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication procedures.
These first ever Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication procedures in JNMC were carried on patients, who were admitted after complaining burning sensations in upper abdomens, vomiting and sleeping difficulties due to reflux of food. Prof Mohammad Habib Raza, Dr M Sadik Akhtar, Dr M Yusuf Afaque and Dr Arif Rasool operated the patients with the help of JNMC anaesthesia team and junior doctors.
Prof Mohammad Habib Raza said that these patients, who are in the age group of 25 to 29-years, were on Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) drugs. "They reached JNMC after finding no relief from medications," he said adding that they were diagnosed with hiatus hernia which required immediate surgeries.
He pointed out that these three patients, who underwent successful surgeries were among six patients being treated for hiatus hernia at JNMC. The others have not been advised yet for surgeries.
"People suffering symptoms of hiatus hernia and gastroesophageal reflux diseases in Aligarh and nearby areas do not have to travel far off places for treatments, they can now reach JNMC and meet our surgeons," said Prof Raza.
