17-NOV-2018: North Zone Hockey Intervarsity Tournament begins: AMU and JMI register emphatic win
Aligarh, November 17: Two hat-tricks by fullback Mohd Faraz and half back Sonu Kumar enabled the host Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to register an emphatic win over Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), Kanpur, in the inaugural match of the North Zone Interversity Hockey tournament here on Saturday at the Astroturf Ground, AMU.
The star of the match was Faraz who recently brought laurels to India Under-23 team, scored maximum four goals. Sonu Kumar 3goals, Nitish Kumar 2goals, Mantosh 1goal, Safi 1goal and Naved 1goal were the other scorers for AMU.
In other matches, Jamia Millia Islamia (Delhi) thrashed Allahbad University by 15-0, RML Awadh University demoralized LPU Phagwara 9-0 and Kashmir University got walkover against PAU Ludhiyana,
Earlier, Prof Tariq Mansoor Vice Chancellor AMU inaugurated the tournament and emphasised that there is need of people from the hockey fraternity to come forward and inspire the youngsters of India, AMU is a place where enormous potential exists as we have produced 17 Olympians legends.
On the Occasion Guest of Honour Dr. Shadab Memmood, Prof MH Beg (Pro Vice Chancellor, AMU), Mr. Abdul Hamid, IPS (Registrar AMU), Mr. Balwinder Singh, Observer of Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Dr. GS Hasmi (Organising Secretary) , the President and Vice President of AMUSU Salman Imtiaz and Hamza Sufyan were also present.
Prof. Amjad Rizvi, Secretary, University Games Committee welcomed the guests and Dr. Shariq Aqil conducted the programme.
Thirty four teams are participating in the tournament.
