26-MAR-2019: International workshop held on Pulmonology
ALIGARH March 26: The Department of TB and Chest Diseases, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University organized an International workshop under the Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) on Interventional Pulmonology (ACIP).
Addressing the inaugural session of the event, which also marks the silver jubilee of the establishment of the department, AMU Vice Chancellor Professor Tariq Mansoor said that the department has developed into an advance centre of study of respiratory diseases and caters to a large section of society with special focus on marginalized segment.
Chief guest Padmashri Prof Randeep Guleria, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, highlighted advances in respiratory medicine and urged the residents to excel in their branch of medicine through the use of technology and newer researches.
Prof Jamalul Azizi (National Head of Pulmonology Services, Malaysia), Prof SC Sharma (Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Principal, J N Medical College, AMU), Dr Vivek Nangia (a JNMC alumnus), Dr Jahangir Warsi (Local Coordinator GIAN) and Dr Huma Mustafa (Joint Director UP-CST) also spoke on the occasion.
Welcoming the guests, Workshop Coordinator and Chairman of the department, Prof Mohammed Shameem said that the five-day workshop will enable doctors to study the new developments in Pulmonology science and young residents will get acquainted with the special training in diseases and conditions of the chest, particularly pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, and complicated chest infections.
The workshop is being attended by more than 25 doctors coming from various parts of the world, including Dr Jamalul Azizi (Malaysia), Prof Anant Mohan (Chairman, Pulmonary Critical Care, AIIMS, Delhi), Dr Pratibha Singhal (Consultant Pulmonologist, Mumbai), Dr Hari Krishan (Sikandrabad) and AMU alumni Dr Naveed N Shah (Head, CD Hospital, Srinagar) and Dr Shamim Akhtar (Head, Respiratory Medicine, St Stephens Hospital, Delhi).
Prof Mohammed Shameem said that the event will bring the opportunity to interact with experts, exchange information and strengthen collaboration among academia and industry.
Vice Chancellor Prof Tariq Mansoor, along with the chief guest, Prof Randeep Guleria, unveiled the Alumni Directory of the department.
On the occasion, senior faculty members of the department, Prof Rakesh Bhargava and Prof Zuber Ahmad were felicitated by students for their invaluable contributions made to respiratory medicine.
Dr Vivek Nangia, the first alumnus of the department, engaged the audience with his nostalgic memories of being a post graduate and coming back to his Alma Mater as a guest speaker and guided the budding pulmonologists to boldly take up the challenges in the field.
Prof Zuber Ahmad proposed a vote of thanks while Dr Mansoor and Dr Arushi Verma conducted the programme.
