24-JUL-2019: KA Nizami Centre for Quranic Studies publishes critical study on Urdu Tafsir
ALIGARH July 24: The K A Nizami Centre for Quranic Studies, Aligarh Muslim University has brought out its new publication on Quranic Tafsir entitled "Quran Interpretation in Urdu: A Critical Study", Viva Books edited by Mr Nazeer Ahmad Ab Majeed, Assistant Professor, K A Nizami Centre for Quranic Studies.
It is an edited volume on famous commentaries of the Quran in Urdu including Mudih al-Our'an (1829) by Shah Abdul Qadir (d. 1815), Tawzih al-Majid fi Tanqih Kalam Allah al-Hamid (1836) by Sayyid Ali (d. 1843), Bayan al-Qur'an (1908) by Ashraf Ali Thanwi (d. 1943), Tarjuman al-Qur'an (1930-1936) by Abul Kalam Azad (d. 1958), Tafsir-i Majidi (1960) by Abdul Majid Daryabadi (d. 1977), Ziya al-Qur'an (1965) by Mohammad Karam Shah (d. 1998), Ma'arif al-Qur'an (1972) by Muhammad Shafi (d. 1976), Tafhim al-Qur'an (1949-1972) by Abul A'la Maududi (d. 1979), etc.
The book carries papers contributed by AMU faculty members including Professor Abdur Raheem Kidwai, Professor Abu Sufyan Islahi, Dr Nazeer Ahmad Ab Majeed, Dr Muhammad Mubeen Saleem, Dr Abrar Ahmad, Dr Aiyyoob Akram, Dr Raza Abbas, Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Tijarwi, Dr Muhammad Rafiuddin Farooqui, Mr Raziul Islam and Mr Gowhar Quadir Wani. Some of these papers, originally written in Urdu, have been translated into English by research scholars of Aligarh Muslim University, Mr Muhammad Haris bin Mansoor, Mr Muhammad Waheed Khan, Mr Waseem Yusuf Makai (Department of English) and Mr Gowhar Quadir Wani (Department of Islamic Studies).
Professor Abdur Raheem Kidwai, Director of the Quran Centre has expressed happiness on the publication of the Tafsir and said it will provide an opportunity to the English-speaking readers to gain an idea of the main contours, trends and methodology of Tafsir writing in Indian subcontinent over the last two centuries.
