29-JUL-2019: Live procedures at JNMC workshop
Aligarh, July 29: Five patients from Aligarh, Hathras and Khurja were weary and nerves about 'going under the knife' for the treatment of rheumatic heart diseases, which they have been suffering for years.
But, surgeons at the Centre of Cardiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University made sure that the fears and anxiety of these patients do not overwhelm them as surgical processes were done live, in a Cath Lab Workshop at JNMC by Prof Asif Hasan (Director, Centre of Cardiology), Dr Viveka Kumar (Max Saket, New Delhi), Prof M U Rabbani, Dr Malik Azharuddin and Dr Rafi Anwar with other faculty members.
The surgical team implanted a Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT)_P device in one of the patients, while complex angioplasty and balloon mitral valvutomy procedures were done on others.
As these patients have successfully recovered, their next visits to the hospital will be for follow ups on need basis.
Prof Asif Hasan said that live surgeries in workshops provide excellent training opportunities, as they allow the audience to view operation conducted by renowned surgeons and interaction with them in real time.
He added that the success of these complex procedures at JNMC is a boon for people from lower income groups as a nominal treatment cost relives people from the stress of high price of healthcare at posh hospitals in bigger cities.
"With these procedures, we have added all variety of interventions at the JNMC Cath Lab," emphasised Prof Hasan.
Dr Viveka Kumar pointed out, "When experienced surgeons demonstrate technique to an audience of keen peers during workshops, it brings participants in a realistic environment where they can hone their skills in cardiac surgery procedures."
