One day webinar on ¯Biology and Medicine: Recent advances¯
A one day webinar on ¯Biology and Medicine: Recent advances¯ was held on October 10, 2020, in the Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Owing to their heavy engagement, the Vice Chancellor Professor Tariq Mansoor and the Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Zaheeruddin couldn¯t attend the webinar which was to be inaugurated by them. After the recitation of the verses from the Holy Quran, the Chairperson, Prof Mohammad Afzal welcomed the speakers who are the alumni of the university namely Prof Nahid Ali, presently emeritus at the Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata (student of the Department of Biochemistry, AMU, Aligarh), Prof. Qudsia Tahseen of the Department of Zoology (who was student from the same Department) and Dr Bushra Ateeq, the Bhatnagar Laureate who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering IIT, Kanpur and also hails from the Department of Zoology. Dr. Ateeq was educated up to Ph.D. level and did her thesis in Genetics. Prof. Wasim Ahmad, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences introduced the participants about the performance of the Faculty in graphic details and also the present academic ethos of the University which has brought it to a vaunted level in the country. Prof Naheed Ali spoke brilliantly on Leishmaniasis, exploiting immunology for innovative diagnosis, prevention and cure, where she discussed immunology and therapeutic measures. She is a Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences, and all the three major science academies of India. Prof Qudsia Tahseen in her lecture on ¯Revisiting Taxonomy and Sustenance of Biodiversity¯ described current tools and techniques used in modern Taxonomy to help explore the flora and fauna, the threat from climatic change and habitat loss due to land degradation specially on the below ground Biodiversity (nematodes and soil organisms). Dr. Bushra Ateeq¯s talk on ¯Androgen deprivation therapy: the double-edged sword in prostate cancer treatment¯ was wonderful. She discussed the role of spink-one protein and prostate cancer in various types of pathogenicity.
