Exhibition of books on Mahatma Gandhi and other Documents at Maulana Azad Library

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Maulana Azad Library is going to organize an exhibition of Books and other Documents on Gandhiji and his companions in the Central Hall of the library. Prof. Tariq Mansoor, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the university will be the Chief guest and inaugurate the exhibition at 09:45 AM, 2nd October 2022. This event will continue up to 3rd October till 05:00 PM.

MA Library holds more than a thousand books on Mahatma Gandhi. Some of them are rare and of national importance. More than 600 books and documents will be displayed in several languages like, English, Hindi, Urdu, Persian and Arabic. Almost 350 books in English, 100 books in Urdu, Persian, and Arabic, and 150 books in Hindi languages covering the various aspects of the life of Mahatma Gandhi such as being a human, a politician, a leader, a champion of secularism, a promoter of non-violence.

The most prominent documents are books authored by Gandhiji and their translations into several languages and his collected works in 100 volumes. The handwritten letters by Mahatma Gandhi especially a letter to Lady Ummat-ul-Islam, the daughter of Colonel Mohammad Hameed Khan, Finance Minister of the princely state of Patiyala written on 20th July 1937, and the letter written on 29th July 1942 to Abdul Bari, an old boy of AMU will be of great interest to the visitors. Another letter written to the student union’s General Secretary of AMU on the 7th of January 1937 will also be displayed.

Further, three issues (1939, 1940, and 1946) of the newspaper “Harijan” will be on display. This newspaper was started by Mahatma Gandhi in 1933 and used to contain 8 pages which continued publishing till 1948. Gandhiji himself was a regular contributor to this newspaper.

During the exhibition, a special presentation on the life and services of Mahatma Gandhi will also be displayed through a PowerPoint presentation in the Cultural Hall of M A Library. Rare, archival images and documents capturing Gandhi’s contribution to India’s freedom movement and his views on diverse issues are part of a special exhibition.
