Heritage Cell is located in the Department of Architecture at Zakir Husain
College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University. The objective of
the Cell is to provide the guidance for the conservation and restoration of
Heritage buildings and sites in the Campus. The Heritage Cell
was established with a cause to restore the legacy of Aligarh Muslim University
which is prevailing in the form of Heritage Buildings and sites. The Cell was
developed with a meticulous efforts of the Convener, Dr. Mohammad Farhan Fazli under
the Chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen.
Zameer Uddin Shah on 1st June 2013 and passed in the Special
meeting of Executive Council held on 10th June 2013.
The Convener Heritage Cell visited University of Oxford as "Visiting Research
Assistant" in year 2014 on the invitation of Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies
to understand the "Conservation Strategies in the European Countries".
The cell is organizing workshops and training programs to provide awareness
about the rich cultural heritage of the campus.
In this light the first workshop on "Revival of Traditional Techniques and
Materials" was organized by the Cell in collaboration with Hobbies Workshop,
General Education Centre, AMU in the year 2014.This workshop was intended to
revive the past glory by resorting the traditional techniques like arches &
dome construction and materials like lime mortar & lime plaster to be used
in conserving the invaluable heritage of the campus.
In the year 2015, the Heritage Cell in collaboration with Centre for
Excellence in Islamic Architecture, Department of Architecture has organized a
Short Term Training Programme on "Traditional & Modern Materials and
Techniques of Faťade Adornment in Islamic Structures". It was the first
initiative of Aligarh Muslim University to revive the traditional materials and
techniques of faťade treatment and to sensitize the people and provide
awareness to restore the incredible heritage of Aligarh Muslim University.
In Feb. 2016 the
Cell has started its first Conservation project "Restoration of Jama Masjid of Aligarh Muslim University". The project
involves the cleaning of Araish plaster & consolidation of damaged Araish work, removal & repainting of
floral gold imitation, repainting of Calligraphic inscriptions, removal of
paint and polishing of doors & windows, reinstallation of glass in doors
and windows and replacement of electrical fittings & fixtures in the
interiors of the mosque. In the exterior waterproofing
from the roof top, cleaning of Sand stone, consolidation of damaged stone,
removal of paint & repointing of exposed brick work, repair of inlayed
Calligraphy on Central Pishtaq and Installation of foldable Umbrella in
courtyard of the Mosque are the works to be carried. The restoration work is in
progress and the tentative date of completion of the project is Feb 2017.
