Dr Iqbal Ahmad, Professor and  Chairman of the Department obtained M.Phil (1991) and  Ph. D degree (1994) in Ag. Microbiology from Aligarh Muslim University and worked at Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow (1989-1994). Before joining as a lecturer at the Institute of Agriculture, AMU on 25.3.1995, He has worked as Research Scientist at The Himalaya Drug Company, New Delhi. He has guided 15 PhD and several M.Sc theses completed five Research Projects, edited 12 books, and published more than 150 original research papers and 50 book Chapters. Interdisciplinary Research work has also been conducted in collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Botany, and Biotechnology. The research work published has been fairly cited by the International scientific community. The fair citation has also been on the Web of Science, Scopus, and Research gate. Prof. Ahmad is the Chief editor of the Journal of Pure and Applied Microbiology and on the editorial and advisory board of many Scientific Journals. He has been a visiting Professor at the Department of Biology, Umm-Al Qura University, KSA in 2016 and 2020.  He is the  Course Coordinator of Undergraduate Programme ( B.Sc. Agriculture)  and MSc.(Ag.) Agronomy of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, AMU, Aligarh.

 Major areas of teaching interest: General microbiology, Pathogenic microbes, and drug resistance, soil microbiology, industrial microbiology and fermentation technology, Biomolecules, bacterial genetics, and plasmid biology. Prof. Ahmad has completed extramural Research Projects mainly funded by UGC New Delhi and Indian Oil Corporation( Mathura Oil Refinery). 

Presently On-going International projects include two Indo -UK Joint Research Projects sanctioned by the DBT new Delhi in 2020. In the above Multi-Institutional projects, Prof. Ahmad is Lead PI from India in the  project, SELECTAR with Professor Alan McNally, University of Birmingham, UK( Lead UK PI), and Co-PI in another project (ResPharm) with Prof Wellington, University of Warwick, UK (Project Coordinator, UK) and Professor Neelam Taneja (Project Coordinator -India)

Both National and International PhD and Postdoctoral students have been guided who received funding from DST, ICMR, FICCI, UGC and IOC, New Delhi. The major area of current research Interest: Biofilm based development of PGPR and biofertilizers Microbial ecology, Metal -Microbe interaction and biosorption Novel bioactivity/ compounds from traditionally used Indian medicinal plants Search for anti-infective compounds against drug-resistant bacteria and fungi (antibiofilm, anti quorum sensing, and anti-virulence activities) Understanding antiglycation of natural products.
