Since the establishment of the University in 1920 the Department is engaged in the pursuit of teaching and academic research in all areas of philosophy, especially Muslim philosophy and Western philosophy. It conducts U.G. and P.G.courses besides offering opportunity to pursue research leading to M.Phil and Ph.D degrees.
The Department has shown academic excellence in various areas of philosophy. It has published twenty (20) books in the field of Muslim philosophy alone. More than 50 research scholars, including many from abroad, have been awarded Ph.D. degrees on various topics of Muslim Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Comparative Religion, Feminism, Analytic Philosophy, Applied Ethics and Philosophy of Science, etc. Presently, there are about twenty research scholars enrolled in the department. The department has, in the past, organized many national and international seminars on contemporary and classical issues. The department is also publishing an annual journal "Aligarh Journal of Islamic Philosophy" which attracts scholarly contributions from the internationally renowned professors and researchers.
