The Department of Linguistics is relatively a vivacious and vibrant department with a focus on Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. Established in the year 1968, it has been providing an opportunity to advance teaching and research in linguistics with special reference to Urdu language. Since its inception the department provided post-graduate teaching and research facilities leading to M.Phil and Ph.D., degree in linguistics.
The Departmental Seminar Library is rich and has a collection of more than five thousand books on various themes of linguistics and Urdu linguistics. Efforts are underway to network the same with "AMU LibNet" so that it may be accessed by anyone within the University Campus.
The department is equipped with Wi-Fi facility. The Department of Linguistics has a language lab consisting of around 20 PCS with multimedia support and hi-speed internet connection supported courses. The lab is equipped with software like Praat and Wavesurfer which is utilized while teaching subjects like Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology etc. Besides the regular teaching schedule, the Department organizes International and National seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia etc with a thrust on current theoretical and applied issues in Linguistics.
Recognizing the scholarly contributions of the department in terms of teaching and research, the UGC awarded Special Assistance Program (SAP) to the department. The Phase-I of DRS is completed and now the department has entered into Phase-II of DRS-SAP.
Recently the department has been identified as one of the nodal centres for Northern Zone by the Ministry of HRD, Govt., of India for documentation of Endangered languages under the scheme for promotion and preservation of Endangered Languages (SPPEL)
