According to Dental Council of India (DCI) guidelines, to be eligible for admission to BDS in India, a candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English individually, secured minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology taken together for general category (40% for SC/ST/OBC in many cases), must be at least 17 years of age by 31st December of the admission year, and must qualify the NEET-UG examination, which is mandatory for admission to recognized BDS seats in India. The BDS program is regulated as 4 academic years plus 1 year compulsory rotatory internship under DCI course regulations.

During the course, students study pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Dental Anatomy, Dental Materials, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Pedodontics, and Public Health Dentistry, and must pass all required subjects before internship.

BDS graduates have job opportunities in private dental practice, government hospitals, private hospitals, dental colleges, research, and healthcare administration. They may work as dental surgeons, join public health programs, serve in armed forces or government services, or pursue higher studies such as MDS for specialization.
