10-OCT-2014: Professor MH Beg, Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University said that altered lifestyle, dietary habit and stress are major causes of heart diseases in India, which may lead to morbidity and mortality. He was delivering extra mural lecture on "Cardiac Diseases and Scope of Herbal Drugs" at the Faculty of Unani Medicine, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, AMU.
Professor Beg said that rising incidents of coronary artery diseases, particularly in young adults, is a matter of great concern. He pointed out that the most important morphological reason is the lumen of coronary artery, which is narrower in Indians as compared to their Western counterparts. He said that diet, rich in LDL cholesterol, and sedentary modes of life are also important factors that contribute to coronary artery diseases.
He discussed about the deposition of LDL cholesterol in the lumen of vessels, which forms plaque and consequently develops Atherosclerosis, thereby causing heart diseases and other vascular disorders. He said that such diseases could be prevented by modifying the risk factors like obesity, excessive smoking and consumption of alcohol besides controlling diabetes and hypertension. He gave an account of the several herbal medicines having evidence based role in preventive cardiology, like Arjuna, Garlic, Turmeric, Ginko Biloba, Guggul, Foxglow (Digitalis), Salix Alba, etc.
Professor Hkm Naeem Ahmad Khan, Dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine also expressed his views on the occasion and emphasized that Unani compound formulation could play an important role in preventive cardiology. He pointed out that the first book on Cardiac diseases, Adviat-ul-Qalbia, was written by Ibne Sina.
Professor Mohd Anwar, Convener of the program, mentioned some research oriented drugs used to cure various cardiac ailments. He said that Lipotab, a product of Hamdard Dawakhana, is a famous hypolipidaemic agent.
The programme was presided over by Professor Anis Ismail, Dean, Student's Welfare and conducted by Dr Farooq A Dar. On the occasion, Dr Saud Ali Khan, Principal, AK Tibbiya College, Chairmen of various Departments, faculty members and a large number of students were also present.
