31-OCT-2014: Prof. S.M. Razaullah Ansari, Former Professor, Department of Physics, Aligarh Muslim University, and currently Secretary, Ibn Sina Academy, Aligarh participated in the International Conference held recently to mark the 900th Anniversary of Bhâskarâchârya at Thane, Maharashtra. The conference was organized by the Vidya Prasarak Mandal, Thane.
Dr. V. V. Bedeker, Chairman, Organizing Committee and Manager of V. P. Mandal, Prof. S. R. Sarma, former Chairman, Department of Sanskrit, AMU, presently at Düsseldorf, Germany and Prof. M. Yano, Kyoto, Japan were the organizing spirit of the conference. The conference underlined studies on the works of the renowned Indian Mathematician Bhâskarâchârya (b. 1114 AD) available in Sanskrit. Fifty-one historians of science presented their contributions, out of which nine were foreigners: 3 each from USA and Japan, and 1 each from France, Germany, New Zeeland.
Prof. Ansari, who was the only historian of science in Medieval India, represented Aligarh Muslim University at the conference. He presented a paper "Persian Translations of Bhaskara's Sanskrit Texts during the 16th-17th Centuries and their Impact in the following Centuries". Prof. Ansari covered translations of Lîlâvatî by Faizi , Bhaskara's Algebra (Bîjaganit) by Atâʼullâh Rushdî, s/o Ahmad Mamâr and a handbook on astronomical calculations, Karanakatûhala.
Prof. Razaullah Ansari is an active historian of science in Medieval India. He is a member of Research Council of History of Science Projects granted by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and a former member of Indian National Commission for History of Science. He attended the 24th International Conference of History of Science &Technology, held in Manchester in 2013, as the leader of the India delegation.
