05-Mar-2015: Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will organize an awareness rally on International Women's Day. To mourn maternal mortality rate in the country, the rally will be on the theme ofâ?¦.."To make an effort to reduce maternal mortality through public awareness--Make it happen!"
JNMC's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Chairperson, Professor Seema Hakim pointed out that India accounts for the maximum number of maternal deaths in the world. "Atleast 17 per cent, which is nearly 50,000 of the 2.89 lakh women who died as a result of complications due to pregnancy or childbearing in 2013 were in India," said Prof Hakim quoting research of WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, The World Bank and United Nations.
She said, "despite India is progressing noticeably in curbing the maternal mortality rate (MMR) - 65 per cent drop reported since 1990 - the country is lagging behind the UN-mandated Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of bringing a 75 per cent decline in the MMR till 2015."
Prof Hakim also pointed out that Empowered Action Group (EAG) states that out of all maternal deaths in India, Uttar Pradesh's MMR is much higher (292) than the national ratio (178). "Much work needs to be done in our locality to raise awareness and spread knowledge about preventable causes of maternal mortality," said Prof Hakim.
She further said that on Women's Day, we will mourn the countless lives lost, which could have been easily saved.
"As the Chairperson of Obstetrics & Gynecology, I invite and request all the kindred spirits to show their whole hearted support and join us in our efforts to raise awareness about maternal deaths and help us save lives," she urged.
Prof Hakim also said, "Sometimes by showing the way, others are able to see their way and on this International Womenâ??s Day, let's make it happen."
The rally will take kick-start from the JNMC premises around 5 pm on March 8.
