10-Mar-2015: The Raleigh Literary Society of the Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University organized its inaugural function and the Chief Guest of the function was the Pro-Vice Chancellor of AMU, Brigadier S. Ahmad Ali.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor while commenting on the performance of the students, congratulated them on their fluent use of the English language. He stressed the importance of fluency in spoken English for students, in today‚??s competitive world. He even open heartedly offered to give financial backing to students of the Department of English, for creating their own magazine which would showcase their writings and creativity worldwide.
The Patron of the Society and the Chairperson of the Department of English, Professor Seemin Hasan also gave an impressive speech. It expressed her commitment and deep interest in nurturing the students' creative and intellectual talents. She brought on record the valuable contributions of the Department of English in the recent NAC accreditations for AMU.
The function opened with a report by Sana Fatima, the President of the Raleigh Literary Society. She outlined some intended plans of the Society such as weekly literary events in the Department. She also introduced the post holders and representatives of the Society.
The presentations by the students consisted of recitations of two poems and a play. Muhammad Adam Mirza sang the poem "She Walks in Beauty" and brought out the intensity in the poem.
Sadra Samreen recited the poem "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou with √©lan and grace. The students of BA and MA of the Department of English presented a very innovative and impressive pastiche titled "From Somewhere to Nowhere". It was a feast for the audience to see characters such as Tiresias and Hamlet on stage, taken from various literary masterpieces. The play posed some interesting questions from philosophy and literature. It was well presented and demonstrated the creativity of the students not to mention the guiding influence of their teacher Dr. Aysha Munira Rasheed.
The production team of the play consisted of Fathima Sithara Khathoon, Zoya Irfan, Aanchal Arora, Iftekar Alam, Jibraan Fazilli, Mobashshir Jamal, Sadia Intekhab and Ayesha Zameer.
