20-Mar-2015: Aligarh Muslim University's Dr Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College and Hospital on 'World Oral and Dental Hygiene Day' inaugurated Geriatric and Differently Abled clinic in the Dental College premises. The AMU Dental College today also launched the services of Mobile Dental Vans.
President of the Dental Council of India, Dr Didyendu Mazumder, who attended the function as the chief guest said that the people over 65-years of age and differently abled patients need special dental and medical attentions. "It is a proud moment that AMU's Dental College has taken a step to inaugurate Geriatric and Differently Abled clinic," said Dr Mazumder.
"The service to help poor people of our country can only be done through Government Dental and Medical Colleges," said Dr Mazumder who added that usually students who graduate from Private Dental Colleges do not prefer to work in rural areas. While urging, AMU Dental graduates and postgraduates to treat patients of rural areas, Dr Mazumder said that the government dental colleges have a better standards than private colleges and can attend the patients in rural areas in better ways.
He also pointed out that a research in which I was involved suggests that 80 percent of cancer patients in India are suffering from Oral Cancers. "It is high time that our dentists take up the issue seriously," said Dr Mazumder.
The Principal of Dr Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College and Hospital, Professor R K Tewari said, for quite sometime I was trying to bring the DCI President to AMU and today we have DCI President with us when AMU has achieved Alpha Grade with 3.35cgpa in the recent NAAC Accreditation.
"We have made the dream of centralized sterilization Unit and Geriatric and Differently Abled clinic become a reality in a period of two years of hard work and dedication," said Prof Tewari.
He added, "According to the official Government of India researches and the data available, the average age of geriatric patients may rise to 90 by 2050 in India." He also said that the responsibility of health professionals increases many folds to look after the ageing patients in all fields of medicine and specially in dentistry as overall health of the patients, more or less depends on the oral hygiene and health of the oral cavity.
AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (retd) said that our dentists are chiefly responsible for bringing smiles on us. "One cannot sleep peacefully with an aching tooth and our dentists make it possible for us to sleep without toothaches," said Brigadier Ali. He added that a Geriatric Clinic in our Dental College shows reflection of our culture and ethos in which we are suppose to take care of our old people.
He also said, I have always wondered that how poor people will afford the expensive dental clinics run by private practitioners. He urged doctors, academics and students of AMU's Dental College to serve humanity with affordable treatments for the poor.
Brigadier Ali assured that the University Administration wants to make AMU Dental College and Hospital as the best in the country. "Administration is always there for the support of our Dental College," said Brigadier Ali.
J N Medical College's Principal and CMS, Prof Tariq Mansoor assured that his support as the Superintendent of AMU hospitals is always there for the Dental College and Hospital. He pointed out that our Dental and Medical Colleges attend and treat more patients than private colleges. It is an honour to have with us the DCI president, Dr Mazumder who has brought transparency in Dental Council of India by allowing universities with established medical colleges to have dental colleges in India. He pointed out that Dr Mazumder have always believed that the service to humanity can be done more through Government Dental Colleges and his support to AMU's Dental college is enormous.
The Dean Faculty of Medicine, Prof Shahjahan Bano said that our Dental and Medical Colleges are marching ahead and soon we will have super specialty courses and services in AMU's Dental College.
AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier Ali also launched the 'University Journal of Dental Science (Official online publication of AMU Dental College)' during the function.
While Dr Khushboo Gupta conducted the program, Prof N D Gupta delivered vote of thanks for the speakers and guests.
