23-Mar-2015: In a rare feat, a team J N Medical College's doctors led by Department of Cardiovascular Surgery's Chairman Professor M H Beg and Dr Mohd Azam Haseen assisted by the Department of Anesthesia performed an open-heart surgery on a 20-day-old infant boy suffering from an unusual congenital heart defect.
The child, who recovered well, was discharged on 13th day of surgery.
Doctors said that besides technical complexities involved in the surgery there was wide communication between blood vessels carrying pure and impure blood to heart.
"Anesthesia was given by Dr Kamran and his team while the post operative care was given by Prof Syed Manazir and Dr Uzma Firdaus," confirmed Prof Beg.
Prof Beg added that PDA surgeries are being done in JNMC for a long time but this case was first of its kind. He also confirmed this was so far the smallest child operated in JNMC.
He also pointed out that the child was born with breathing difficulties and his condition deteriorated further as he developed pneumonia. "The child was kept on a ventilator for several days".
Dr Shaad Abkari later diagnosed the child as having a congenital heart defect, which needed urgent surgery.
Principal and CMS of JNMC, Prof Tariq Mansoor expressed his happiness at the development and hoped that very soon open heart surgery facilities will become available at JNMC.
