23-Mar-2015: Women's College of the Aligarh Muslim University today celebrated its Founder's Day, which marks the wedding day of Sheikh Abdullah, pioneer of female education and his wife Begum Waheed Jahan in 1902.
On this occasion, Fakeha Ayub Zinjani was conferred upon Papa Mian Padma Bhushan Award and Ms. Shabeena Fatima was awarded M. J. Haider Memorial Academic Award by the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah (Retd.).
AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S. Ahmad Ali felicitated Ms. Sara Naqvi with the medals she won at international level in badminton. Another budding talent in Badminton, Kanwaljeet Kaur, who has excellently performed in badminton tournaments, was also honoured on this occasion. Kulsoom Salahuddin was also felicitated for winning six medals in the NCC camp.
In her welcome address, Prof. Naima Gulrez, Principal, Women's College thanked the Vice Chancellor General Shah for granting two new buses to Women's College and Rs. One Crore for construction of two classrooms and one staff room. She said that the Vice Chancellor has been instrumental in providing four smart classrooms, two of which have already become functional. She said that the introduction of smart classroom has brought remarkable changes in teaching approach.
Prof. Naima Gulrez further said that the Vice Chancellor has proposed modernization of the sports complex for girls with an amount of Rs. Five crores. She said that an additional fund of Rs. 10 lakh has been provided for development of library infrastructure in the college, for which Women's College students were grateful to the Vice Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor released two books authored by Prof. Iffat Ara and Dr. Ahsanullah Fahad. Gen. Shah also inaugurated a Smart Classroom in the college, which has been developed with a donation made by Mr. Syed Nadeem Ahmad in memory of his mother.
Addressing the Founder's Day celebration, the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Shah paid rich tributes to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, popularly known as Papa Mian. He said that Sheikh Sahab had great courage and made invaluable services to the mankind and women.
Gen. Shah said that the AMU has got the possession of Abdullah Lodge and the building's premises will be utilized as the sports complex and Swimming Pool. He said that after completion of 1500 bedded Women's Hostel, the Indira Gandhi Hall will be allotted to Women's College.
On this occasion, AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brig. Ali highlighted contributions of Sheikh Abdullah for promotion of female education. He said that Sheikh Abdullah translated his dream into action and his role as a champion of female education stands out as exemplary.
Dr. Roomana Siddiqui conducted the programme and Prof. Imrana Nasim proposed a vote of thanks. Students of the Music Club presented the College Tarana and University Tarana.
