19-DEC-2015: The Department of Mathematics, Aligarh Muslim University today started three-days International Conference on Analysis and its Applications. The inaugural session of the prorgamme, which is sponsored by UGC- DRS (SAP-II), AMU, SERB and INSA took place at the New Conference Room of the Department of Mathematics.
Delegates from various parts of India and countries including USA, Canada, Germany, Turkey, and Tunisia among others are participating in the conference.
While introducing the gathering of dignitaries with a brief history of the Department of Mathematics and Aligarh Muslim University, Professor Mursaleen, Chairman, Department of Mathematics, who is also the Coordinator of the programme said that it has been a long journey for our department from the establishment of Mohammadian Anglo Oriental College on January 08, 1877 to attaining the 69th best Mathematics Department rank across the World according to US NEWS survey. He said that the survey makes Department of Mathematics, AMU as the best mathematics department in India.
He further said that by 1910-11, the college had unique distinction of having on its staff eminent Professors of Mathematics like Dr J C Chakravarti, Dr Sir Ziauddin Ahmad and Dr M A Aziz.
"One of the earliest mathematicians associated with the Department was Dr Sir Ziauddin Ahmad who, along with Professor Chakravarti founded the first group of teachers and research workers with main interests in astronomy, history of mathematics and theory of functions," said Prof Mursaleen.
Prof Abdul Muneer, Dean, Faculty of Science lamented that Mathematics has its presence from the wonders of the Taj Mahal to the making of the Nuclear bombs.
"Mathematics was earlier said to be the mother of all sciences and now it has the distinction of being called, the mother of all technologies," said Prof Muneer adding that mathematics is applicable in all streams of sciences and humanities. He also said that International conferences are good opportunities to share ideas and to have a common platform in various allied branches of sciences.
The Chief Guest, Prof R P Agarwal, Texas A & M University, Kingsville, USA said this Intenational Conference is the first ever conference, he is attending in India. He further said that AMU is keeping up with the high standards in the Mathematics field.
Prof Agarwal pointed out that he keeps meeting academics and alumni of AMU in various conferences around the world. "The meetings with AMU academicians and scholars in various conferences left profound impressions and a longing to visit AMU," he said adding that today his wish has been realized.
Guest of Honour, Prof J K Kim, Kyungnam University, South Korea informed that this is his third visit to India and he feels comfortably home at AMU. While concluding his address, Prof Kim invited the dignitaries present at the conference to attend conferences at the Kyungnam University.
Recalling his student days in the Allahabad University, Prof H M Srivastava, University of Victoria, Canada said that many of his teachers had close connections with AMU.
He added that AMU's Department of Mathematics is keeping up with its international rank, it is a proud day to sit here with dignitaries, and intellectuals form AMU, other Indian universities and the world over.
Convener of the programme Prof Kaleem Raza Kazmi delivered the welcome address, while Prof Subuhi Khan, Co-Convener conducted the programme and delivered the vote of thanks.
Prof Youssef Ben Cheikh from Tunisia, Prof E Malkowsky from Germany, Prof A J Akbarfam from Iran, Prof Vatan Karakaya from Turkey, Prof P K Benerji from Jodhpur and Prof P Veeramani from Chennai are also attending the conference.
On the occasion, a souvenir of the conference was also released.
