21-MAR-2016: Delivering the presidential address at a two-day National Conference on "Agriculture, Environment and Sustainable Development", organized by the Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University, the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah said that the fast changing climatic conditions, on account of environmental degradation, have largely affected the agricultural output in various parts of India.
He said that sustainable development and environmental changes must not be at cross-purposes. He said that fruit production increased five-fold and rivers are badly polluted.
Noted scientist, Professor Shamim Jairajpuri, former Vice Chancellor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad said that the productivity of crops and population are closely related to each other.
He said that the founder of this institution, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan founded Scientific Society and agriculture was given top priority. He further said that during the Vice Chancellorship of Prof. M.N. Farooqui, who suggested starting of bachelor courses in the faculty of Agricultural Sciences, an Institute of Agricultural Sciences was established to achieve this goal.
An eminent Geographer and Emeritus Fellow of Delhi University, Prof. Noor Mohammad said that Agriculture is the driving force in Indian economy. He lambasted that agriculture land is declining due to deforestation.
Welcoming the delegates, Prof. Shamsul Haque Siddiqui, Chairman, Department of Geography said that due to global warming, depletion of underground water, change in the soil chemistry leading to expansion of the area under alkaline and saline soils, soil eosin, devastating floods and frequent droughts are posing a great problem especially in poor and developing countries of the world in achieving the target of food security and improvement in the availability and quality of the food and in bringing the socio economic equality by minimizing the gap between the haves and have nots.
Prof. Abdul Munir, Dean, Faculty of Science said that the theme of the conference is highly relevant at a time of unprecedented resource exploitation. He further said that only sustainable development would lead to progress of a nation.
On this occasion, the AMU Vice Chancellor released a souvenir and a Biannual journal 'The Geographer'.
Professor Ateeque Ahmad, Organizing Secretary of the conference proposed a vote of thanks. Prof. Nizamuddin Khan conducted the inaugural ceremony.
