11-APR-2016: The medical experts expressed the need for addressing the problem of the ever neglected parasitic diseases and called for updating and refreshing knowledge about these diseases at the concluding ceremony of 2nd UP & UK Chapter of Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology (IATP), TROPACON -2016, organized by Department of Microbiology, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University.
The first Scientific session, which was conducted by Dr Richa Gupta, Department of Microbiology, commenced with the lecture on 'Rapid diagnosis of intestinal and extra intestinal amoebiasis' by Professor U Ghoshal, SGPGI, Lucknow. She discussed the various methods for the microbiological diagnosis of intestinal and extra intestinal amoebiasis and also stressed on the identification of morphologically similar species. Professor Ghoshal emphasized on the need for molecular diagnosis for the identification and epidemiological studies.
Professor B R Mirdha, AIIMS, New Delhi, discussed 'Clinical aspects & molecular diagnosis of Giardiasis' and provided an insight about the topic.
Dr Vineeta Singh, NIMR, New Delhi talked about 'Epidemiology of malaria in India' and discussed about the burden of malaria world-wide, particularly in the third world countries. She also pressed for the need to have an effective vaccine against malaria.
The Second Scientific session was conducted by Dr Naushaba Siddique, Department of Microbiology. Professor Nancy Malla, PGI, Chandigarh spoke on 'Echinococcosis: A modern disease'. Professor Manju Bala, VMMC & SJ Hospital, New Delhi, delivered lecture on 'Trichomonas: An Update' and illuminated the audience with the contemporary research aspects of the trichomoniasis.
Professor Shaista Vasenwala, JN Medical College, while discussing about 'Cytohistopathological diagnosis of parasites', presented a series of 12 elaborate clinical cases of parasitic diseases while Dr T Bannerjee, IMS, Varanasi spoke on 'Emergence of resistance against repellent in mosquitoes'.
The Third Scientific Session was conducted by Dr Samia Kirmani, Dept of Microbiology. The Session also included a Quiz competition and a poster session to refersh the knowledge of the participants regarding the tropical parasitic diseases. In the quiz competition Dr Huma Naeem and Dr Neha Garg got the first while the second prize was awarded to Dr Sadaf Reyaz and Dr Jayanti. Dr M A Hannan Khan and Dr Ranjan Prabhat together received the first prize whereas Dr Vaibhav Gupta and Dr Sonali Khanduja stood second and Dr Zarine Khan stood third in the poster session.
The conference ended with the closing note by Professor Nancy Malla and the vote of thanks by Professor Haris M Khan, Chairperson, Department of Microbiology.
