12-APR-2016: Professor Anurag Srivastava, Head, Department of Surgical Disciplines, AIIMS, New Delhi delivered an extension lecture on 'Benign Breast Diseases', which was arranged by Professor Mohammad Aslam, Chairperson, Department of Surgery, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University.
While addressing the gathering, Professor Srivastava informed that the complaints of breast lumps and pains have become common which evoke a fear of acquiring cancer among people. He elaborated that only 5 to 20% of patients having breast cancer experience breast pain, while majority of them have benign breast disease. Professor Srivastava said that patients having benign breast disease need to be thoroughly examined and investigated, and should be reassured that they could be successfully managed by simple treatment methods.
Professor Srivastava stressed the need for proper and methodical breast self-examination. He informed that in case of breast cancer usually the breast having cancer is removed in entirety.
Prof Srivastava also performed a breast conserving operation on a patient with breast cancer along with Professor Mohammad Aslam and his team. Later he demonstrated the proper techniques of breast examination to the postgraduate students of the Department of Surgery.

Professor Mohammad Aslam thanked Professor Srivastava for his effective presentation and for the guidance and teaching that he provided to the students.
