16-JUL-2016: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah has strongly refuted the allegations made by Mr. Satish Gautam, Member of Parliament from Aligarh, saying that Mr. Gautam's contention that he did not believe in the constitutional framework of India or a judicial verdict by the Supreme Court, was totally incorrect and misplaced. He said he had "complete faith in the judiciary and the fairness and sagacity of our Prime Minister".
Responding to Mr. Gautam's letter of 13th July 2016, which also appeared in a section of media, Lt. Gen. Shah said that "he was out of station and could not respond immediately", but Mr. Gautam chose to release it to the press without his refutation of the allegations.
The Vice Chancellor made it clear that in his interview he had said that "despite the ongoing agitation in several universities, there had been no lawlessness in AMU. I however felt that in case of an adverse judgment on the 'Minority Character' Case, there might be a student agitation as these (students) were emotionally involved".
Taking strong cognizance of Mr. Gautam's allegation, Lt. Gen. Shah said, "I am not projecting a fundamentalist image, far from it, I uphold the secular values of AMU and I myself have imbibed modern and moderate values in my upbringing and 40 years in the Army".
He has appealed to Mr. Gautam not to project him in a negative light. "We should not do anything to spoil the peace and tranquility of our city which we all cherish and wish to preserve", he added.
