29-AUG-2016: The faculty members and students of the Department of Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University today gathered to pay rich tributes to Prof. Akhlaqur Rahman Kidwai, former Chancellor of the University and a former faculty member of the Department, who passed away in Delhi on August 24, 2016.
Expressing a deep sense of sorrow and grief, Chairman of the Department, Prof. Mohammad Shakir said that after completing his education at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, University of Illinois and University of Cornell, US, Prof. Kidwai started his career as a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at AMU in the early 1950s. In due course of time, he was appointed as Reader and then Professor and rose to become the Head of the Department and Dean, Faculty of Science in 1966.
Prof. Kidwai significantly contributed in the development of the department, improved the standards of teaching and research and introduced new courses of study to keep pace with latest developments in the domain of Chemistry. He also played an important role in the University administration and served as Proctor from 1962-64. He was the first to become Dean Students' Welfare in 1962 and served till 1967.
The staff and students present in the condolence meeting expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and pray for elevated place for Prof. Kidwai's in Jannah.
