12-NOV-2016: AMU Alumnus, Dr Ashok Kumar Raghav, IPS and Vice Chancellor of APG Shimla University today delivered lecture the 'Dr Ambedkar Memorial Lecture' on 'Dr Ambedkar's Role and Contribution in Law and Constitution Making' at the Moot Court Hall of the Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University. The lecture was organized by Dr Ambedkar Chair of Legal Studies and Research, Department of Law after an initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
While delivering the lecture, Dr Raghav said that Dr B R Ambedkar was a pragmatist to the core, who believed that in the absence of economic and social justice, political independence would not bring about social solidarity and national integration.
"Dr Ambedkar advocated the abolition of privileges on the basis of caste or status and vigorously fought for the liberty and dignity of the individual," said Dr Raghav adding that Dr Ambedkar was equally force-full in his advocacy of the unity of the nation.
Dr Raghav said that to summarise, the greatest achievement of Dr Ambedkar is the 'hope', he gave to millions of depressed people as he made them realise the errors of the caste system, eventually bring respect to the oppressed communities.
Dr Raghav further said that drafting a Constitution requires the highest statecraft, statesmanship, scholarship, intellectual acumen endowed with a flood of knowledge of the nation's and world history. He added that to Dr Ambedkar, the Constitution was not just the basic law for the governance of the country, but, it was a vehicle of the nation's progress, reflecting the best in the past traditions of the country, to cope with the needs of the present and possessing enough resilience to meet the needs of the future.
While introducing Dr Raghav on the occasion, Professor Iqbal Ali Khan, Chairman, Department of Law and Programme Director said besides his work as the Vice Chancellor of APG Shimla University, Dr Raghav has also set up the AMU Alumni Association of Dehradun, which organizes important programmes on AMU and helps in guiding AMU students for their future prospects.
Prof Javaid Talib, Dean, Faculty of Law and President of Law Society proposed the vote of thanks.
Law Society Vice President, Mr Syed Mohd Haris; Secretary, Mr Farhan Shamsi; the joint secretaries and editors of the Law Society worked actively to make the programme successful.
