15-NOV-2016: The Department of Philosophy, Aligarh Muslim University today observed the 'World Philosophy Day' as declared by UNESCO at the Faculty of Arts Lounge. Professor S P Gautam from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, who is also a former Vice Chancellor of the Rohilkhand University delivered a lecture on 'Why do we need Philosophy?' on the occasion.
While delivering his lecture, Prof Gautam said that celebrating 'World Philosophy Day' each year, UNESCO underlines the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual.
Speaking on the relevance of philosophy, Prof Gautam added that philosophical reflections are a call to humility for engaging in reasoned dialogues and searching for solutions to challenges. He pointed out that this is the best way to educate enlightened citizens, equipped to fight stupidity and prejudice.
Prof Gautam further said that the beauty of philosophy is that it is a discipline that encourages critical and independent thought and at the same time works for a better understanding of the world, while promoting tolerance and peace.
"Philosophy gave the conceptual grounding to the principles and values that shaped the possibility of world peace - democracy, human rights, justice and equality," said Prof Gautam adding that reflection on contemporary society's unsolved problems and unanswered questions has always been at the heart of philosophical analysis and thinking.
Prof Gautam said that the greater the difficulties are encountered, the greater the need for philosophy to make sense of questions of peace and sustainable development arises.
He also said that since philosophy is a study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language; philosophy has relevance to all the scientific and social science fields known to the world.
While introducing the guest speaker at the function, Prof Tariq Islam, Chairman, Department of Philosophy said that by institutionalization of Philosophy Day at UNESCO as 'World philosophy Day' will give impetus to philosophy and, in particular, to the teaching of philosophy. He added that philosophy is there in all disciplines and it belongs to everyone, everywhere, who cares about philosophy.
Delivering his presidential remarks, Prof Shaikh Mastan, Dean, Faculty of Arts said that Prof Gautam's lecture has enlightened us. He added that it is difficult to speak more on the subject after Prof Gautam's has left everyone with enormous knowledge on use of philosophy in today's world with his lecture. He also said that as philosophy takes us to light from darkness, Prof Gautam's lecture has thrown light on how we should see things in the world.
Another highlight of the event was a play performed by the MA Philosophy students on the trial and death of Socrates. The play brought together, dialogues relating to the dramatic trial and death of Socrates and the courage of his defence and acceptance of his fate.
