17-NOV-2016: Professor M Masroor Akhtar Khan, Department of Botany, Aligarh Muslim University delivered a talk during the ‚??International Conference on Radiation Biology‚?? at the SRM University in Chennai. Prof Khan attended the conference on a special invitation.
While speaking on ‚??Positive uses of Radiation Nuclear Energy‚??, Prof Khan said that there are new possibilities of making agricultural formulations by radiating compounds obtained from specific marine algae through gamma rays.
Prof Khan added that the use of these formulations is safe from hazardous effects of radiation. He further said that that in his research, radiations were used to only make the formulations and plants were not exposed directly to radiations. He pointed out that by this technique, he was able to increase the productivity and quality of several medicinal plants like Artemisia, Sada-bahar, Khas, Lemongrass, Geranium, Eucalyptus, Sauf, Methi and Mentha.
During the talk, Prof Khan also informed that he had developed this technique during a decade-long collaborative research with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. He said that since this technique was successful on medicinal plants, he will now test this research on crop plants like wheat, maize and rice.
While working on medicinal plants for the past 35-years, Prof Khan has presented his research work in USA, Finland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Egypt, Saudia Arabia and Cuba.
