26-NOV-2016: On the initiative of Dr Ambedkar Foundation, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India, Dr Ambedkar Chair of Legal Studies and Research in collaboration with Law Society, Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University today organized various cultural events in connection with the celebrations of Constitution Day, 2016.
Professor Iqbal Ali Khan, Chairperson, Department of Law, AMU, while speaking on Dr BR Ambedkar's role in framing of the Constitution of India, referred him as Messiah for the country.
He said that the Directive Principles of State Policy, contained in Part IV (Article 36-51) of the Constitution of India, are one among the unique contributions by Dr Ambedkar as these are not included in the Constitution of any country except the Irish one.
Prof Khan, while quoting Dr Ambedkar, said that "If we wish to maintain democracy not merely in form, but also in fact, we must hold fast to constitutional methods of achieving our social and economic objectives". He said that Dr Ambedkar Chair of Legal Studies and Research has been constituted as a constructive homage to Dr BR Ambedkar. Professor Khan pressed on the need to generate more awareness regarding the undiscovered aspects of our Constitution among the citizens and to also highlight the role of Dr Ambedkar in the framing of the same.
Professor Javaid Talib, Dean, Faculty of Law informed that the Constitution Day or Law Day is celebrated every year on November 26 by the members of the legal fraternity to mark the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly. He said that the Preamble is the essence of the Constitution in which the enacting words, "We, the people of India", signify the democratic principle that power is ultimately rested in the hands of the people. Professor Talib also read the Preamble with the participation of the audience.
Dr Mohd Tariq, Incharge, Law Society, while reading the fundamental rights, briefly explained about their importance. He also proposed the Vote of thanks. The program was compeered by Ms Urooj Afreen.
Syed Mohd Haris, Vice President, Farhan Shamsi, Secretary, Mehboob Alam, Editor, Law Society along with Piyush Gautam, Moot Court Secretary and Salman Qasmi, Abdullah Samdani, Utkarsh Srivastav, Faham Ahmed Khan and Shabaz Akhtar contributed their level best in the organization of the program.
As part of the cultural events a panel discussion, Legal Quiz, Poster making and Essay writing competitions were also organized on the occasion.
