10-DEC-2016: A team of surgeons from Jawaharlal Nehru College's Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery recently performed a successful open heart surgery of a nine-year-old girl. The surgery was performed by the team under Professor M H Beg, Chairman, Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery.
The patient, who is a daughter of a University employee, had a defected heart with a hole since her birth. The defect was operated with the PTFE PATCH procedure, during which the patient's heart and lungs functioned with the help of a machine for about 20 minutes. The patient has now recovered and will soon be discharged.
Prof Beg informed that this was the second successful open heart surgery performed in JNMC. He added that the surgery was done at a very nominal cost with an NGO also helping the patient with finances.
The team, which performed the surgery included Associate Prof, Dr Mohd Azam Haseen; Assistant Prof, Dr Ehtesham Naqvi and Dr Manju Gupta from the Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. Anaesthesia team led by Dr Nadeem Raza was also involved in the surgery.
